Firearm recovered after citizen tip

On January 25, 2017 around 2:47pm., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 4000 block of W Michigan on a 911 call of a man with a gun. The caller had observed a male holding a handgun, in the parking lot of an apartment complex. The caller then observed the male get into a vehicle that had left the apartment complex. As officers were checking the area the vehicle returned to the apartment complex. Contact was made with the occupants and a Berretta 9mm handgun was located on the front seat passenger.

A Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer recognized the driver from a shots fired investigation in November of 2016. The officer was able to gain a confession from the driver of his involvement in that unsolved incident. A third occupant of the vehicle was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Thanks to the alert citizen, a 19 year old male was arrested for carrying a concealed firearm. A 20 year old male will be facing charges related to the November weapons violation and also possession of marijuana.

Motorist in critical condition after single car crash

Kalamazoo, MI: On Sunday, January 22nd, 2017, at 10:05p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the 3700 block of W. Michigan Avenue on a report of a single motor vehicle accident with air bag deployment. Upon arrival to the scene, Public Safety officers located a 21 year-old male unresponsive in the driver seat. Officers immediately began life saving measures. Once stabilized, the driver was transported to Bronson Hospital and is listed in critical condition. It was determined after the initial investigation that the vehicle was eastbound on W. Michigan Ave. when the vehicle left the roadway and collided with a light pole. The events that led up to the accident remain under investigation.

Shooting investigated in the 3600 block of W Michigan Ave

Kalamazoo, MI: On Monday, December 5, 2016, at approximately 10:10 p.m, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to a report of a person shooting at another. Upon arrival, Officers did not locate anyone on scene. A Police K-9 track was initiated, as it was reported by witnesses that the victim fled on foot. As the K-9 officer was tracking, the victim called 911 to report he had been shot and was at a nearby apartment. Officers responded and provided medical care to the victim. The victim, an 18 year Kalamazoo resident, was transported by Life Ambulance to Bronson hospital for a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the arm. During the investigation, the victim claimed he was trying to purchase marijuana from the suspect when the shooting occurred. The suspect, later identified as a 17 year old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested at his home several hours after the incident. A gun was recovered at the home at the time of the arrest. The incident is still under investigation.

Update: Injured man found on W Michigan Ave

The victim in this case has died as a result of his injuries. He has been identified as George Ralph Carlisle, 01/26/58, a Kalamazoo resident. We send our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Carlisle.

Through a thorough investigation by officers and detectives, a person was identified as a suspect in this assault and has been spoken to in regards to this case. The suspect, also a Kalamazoo resident, was arrested on other unrelated charges. A case for involuntary manslaughter will be requested through the Prosecutor’s Office. If charges are issued and the suspect is arraigned, his name will then be released.

We do not have the autopsy report, however, complications from blunt force trauma is a contributing factor. It will take 6-8 weeks for the autopsy report to be completed.

Injured Man Found on W Michigan Ave

Kalamazoo, MI: On Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at approximately 11:00 P.M., a citizen reported that a man sitting on a bench in the 800 block of W. Michigan appeared to be injured. A 57 year old Kalamazoo man was found unresponsive with injuries to his head and face. He was transported to Bronson Hospital and is not expected to survive.

It is unknown how the victim sustained his injures. The injuries are suspicious and the incident is currently under investigation.
