Summit Ave Shots Fired

Kalamazoo, MI: On July 5th, 2018, at around 5 a.m. Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were on Hawley Street addressing quality of life issues when multiple gunshots were heard coming from the area of Summit Ave.

A short time after the gunshots were heard, a vehicle crashed into a fence and parked vehicles. The vehicle was located and stopped by officers. Occupants of the vehicle were arrested on a variety of charges.

Several houses and vehicles were struck by gunfire on Summit Ave. There were no reported injuries. This investigation is ongoing.

Delivery drivers robbed at gunpoint

Kalamazoo, MI: On Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at approximately 10:06 p.m., Kalamazoo Pubic Safety Officers were flagged down by a local food delivery driver who reported being robbed in the area of 1200 Summit Ave. The victim provided a description of three males suspects armed with a handgun who stole cash and personal property. Officers conducted a thorough search for the suspects, including the use of a police K9; however, no suspects could be located.

On Thursday, February 9, 2017 at approximately 10:58 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the area of 700 Summit Park Ct., upon a local food delivery driver reporting being robbed at gunpoint by a lone male. Officers responded to the area and conducted an extensive search with the use of a police K9; however, the suspect was not located.

In both instances the armed suspect was described as a male, black, approximately 20 years of age, 5’11 and armed with a handgun.

Kalamazoo Public Safety would like to ask that all local food delivery drivers be cautious and aware of your surroundings when delivering food. Furthermore, we ask for the public’s help in being an extra set of eyes and ears for those employed as delivery drivers while making their rounds.

Citizen complaint leads to man with firearm

Kalamazoo, MI: On Saturday, October 8, 2016, at approximately 8:09 p.m., Kalamazoo Pubic Safety Officers responded to the area of Douglas Avenue and Summit Avenue for a citizen reporting a man threatening people in the area with a handgun. Public Safety Officers responded to the area and observed the male in question walking on Douglas Avenue. Officers made contact with the man suspected of carrying a gun, and during this contact the man admitted to being in possession of a loaded handgun. Although the man was illegally possessing a handgun, he complied with officers and was cooperative, making the potentially dangerous situation safer for all involved.

As a result of this investigation the man, a 30 year old Kalamazoo resident was arrested and charges of CCW and Possession of Marijuana are being sought. He was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Once again Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety would like to reiterate that through collaboration with community members and stakeholders such as this one, we as a city will continue to reduce crime, build and maintain trust, and provide the most efficient, effective, and professional public safety services available.
