Summit Ave Shots Fired

Kalamazoo, MI: On July 5th, 2018, at around 5 a.m. Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were on Hawley Street addressing quality of life issues when multiple gunshots were heard coming from the area of Summit Ave.

A short time after the gunshots were heard, a vehicle crashed into a fence and parked vehicles. The vehicle was located and stopped by officers. Occupants of the vehicle were arrested on a variety of charges.

Several houses and vehicles were struck by gunfire on Summit Ave. There were no reported injuries. This investigation is ongoing.

Shots Fired Into House

November 27, 2017 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

On November 27, 2017, at approximately 01:49am, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 100blk of West Maple for gun shots into a home. The victim was inside his home when 4 shots were fired into his bedroom window. Prior to the shots being fired the victim had been in altercation with another male. After the altercation ended, the victim walked into his home and shots were then fired. A K-9 track was attempted but the suspect was not located.

Gun and Drugs Recovered After Single Car Accident

August 21, 2017 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

Kalamazoo, MI: Officers responded to the 4200 block of Lakesedge Drive for multiple calls of two shots fired. While checking the area, officers observed a gray Mercury leaving the parking lot, but nothing indicated that it had been involved, and it left the complex.

Shortly thereafter, the same gray Mercury was witnessed losing control and going off the road in the 2300 Block of Stadium Drive. The driver, a 27 year old Kalamazoo man, attempted to flee from the accident, but was apprehended after a brief struggle with officers. The driver left an unregistered pistol in his car, and was found in possession of illegal drugs. The driver was arrested for Felon in Possession of a Firearm, CCW, Possession of Marijuana, Attempted Resisting and Obstructing and Hit and Run. Three additional charges for the driver are being requested.

Suspect Arrested with Firearm After Traffic Stop

May 2, 2017 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

On May 1, 2017, around 10:34pm, a Kalamazoo Public Safety Sergeant was on patrol in the area of Cobb Ave and Lulu St in response to recent reports of shots fired in the area. The Sergeant recognized a vehicle driving in the area to be involved in criminal activity. The Sergeant performed a traffic stop on the vehicle and arrested the driver on 2 outstanding warrants. A search of the vehicle yielded a .32 caliber revolver, methamphetamine and marijuana.

The 41 year old female suspect was arrested on her outstanding warrants. Charges are being sought for carrying a concealed weapon, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, felony firearm, obstruction by disguise and driving on a suspended license.

Stolen firearm recovered after citizen complaint

October 9, 2016 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

Kalamazoo, MI: On Saturday, October 8, 2016, at approximately 4:57 a.m., Kalamazoo Pubic Safety Officers responded to the area of West Paterson and Cobb Street for a citizen reporting gunshots in the area. The alert citizen observed two men walking away from the sound of the gunshots and called KDPS. The citizen providing a detailed description of the men, directed officers to their location. Public Safety Officers arrived at the scene and attempted to make contact with the men described by the citizen; however, both men took off running on foot in separate directions. Officers were able to apprehend both men after brief foot chases. During the course of this investigation officers located a handgun discarded by one of the men as he ran from officers.

As a result of this investigation a 17 year old Galesburg man, and a 21 year old Kalamazoo man, were both arrested. The 17 year old male was arrested for an outstanding warrant and Resist and Obstruct Police. Charges being sought against the 21 year old man include; Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Resist & Obstruct Police, Possession With Intent to Distribute Meth, Possession of Stolen Firearm, and Felony Firearm. Both subjects were lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
