Man shot during drug deal

October 27, 2016 by Spencer Bridges

Kalamazoo, MI: On Wednesday, October 26th, 2016, at approximately 3:42 P.M., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the 600 block of Portage St in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim down on the ground near a local business, from apparent gunshot wounds. Officers gave immediate medical attention. The victim was transported to Bronson Hospital where he was treated and released for minor injuries. The victim, a 27 year old Kalamazoo resident, admitted to officers that he was there to sell a quantity of marijuana. The victim advised a gun was pulled on him during the transaction, and he was ultimately shot.

Officers from the COPS Division were in the area when the shooting was reported. An 18 year old male matching the description of one of the suspects involved, was detained not far from the scene. A police canine was called to the scene, and was able to locate a gun hidden near a business. The suspect, an 18 year-old Kalamazoo resident is currently lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on several drug and weapon offense charges.

Detectives working the case were able to develop a second suspect involved in this shooting, and are currently searching for him. A further update on this individual will be given later today.

Shooting suspect arrested

September 20, 2016 by Spencer Bridges

Kalamazoo, MI: On Friday, September 16th, 2016, at approximately 12:12p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the 1300 block of N. Rose St on a report of shots fired into a residence. Officers determined that the shots fired were directed at a driver of a parked vehicle in the road, not into a residence. The driver of the vehicle that had been shot at had left the area before officers arrived. During a canvas of the area, officers located two spent .40 caliber shell casings located in roadway. Witnesses reported that a black SUV was seen fleeing from the scene after the gunshots.

Approximately one hour after the incident, officers received information from the victim who was the target of the shooting and were able to identify the suspect. Officers were not able to locate the suspect at the time.

On September 17th, 2016 a search warrant was obtained and served at an address located in the 1200 Block of Lakeway Ave. Officers arrested the suspect without incident. A search of the residence revealed two loaded handguns and marijuana. Additionally, shell casings matching the ones recovered from the scene were located in the suspect’s black SUV.

The suspect, a 19 year old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested on an outstanding warrant and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail. Charges will be submitted to the Kalamazoo Prosecutors office for assault with intent to commit murder, felony firearm, CCW, discharge of a firearm from a motor vehicle, and possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Two other individuals were arrested on unrelated warrants.

Anyone having information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 337-8994 or Silent Observer at 343-2100.

Double shooting investigation update

September 6, 2016 by Spencer Bridges

Kalamazoo, MI: On Monday September 5, 2016 at approximately 9:00 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to the area of 1500 Clinton to the report of two people shot in the alley. Officers arrived and found two people with gunshot wounds on the ground. The investigation, as well as an eyewitness account, confirmed that one person was shot by accident as a gun was being “played with” and the other person died from a self inflected gunshot.

The witness confirmed that both people knew each other and there was no argument or altercation prior to the weapon being discharged. Once the first person was shot and died at the scene, the shooter became “distraught” according to the witness, and then took his own life. The evidence found at the scene confirms this.

Public Safety was in no way involved in either shooting, only in the investigation after being called.

This is a very unfortunate incident and we remind people to be mindful and serious about the proper and legal handling of firearms. The firearm in this incident was not stolen, but it was also not properly registered.

This case continues to be investigated and more details will be released as we move forward in this investigation.

Anyone who may have information regarding this investigation is asked to call Kalamazoo Public Safety at 337-8994 or Silent Observer at 343-2100 or www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.
