East Main Shooting Investigation

On May 29th 2018 at approximately 1:30 pm, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of East Main Street regarding the report of gunshots being fired.

While officers responded and investigated in the area further information was received that a victim with a gunshot wound had recently arrived at a local hospital. The victim, a 23 year old Kalamazoo resident was hospitalized and is currently in stable condition.

N Church Street Shooting

Kalamazoo, MI: On Tuesday, February 20th, 2018 at around 09:30 am, Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the 900 block of N Church on a Trouble with Subject complaint. When the first officer arrived at the residence a female was standing outside on the front porch and told the officer that someone had just been shot inside. The officer entered the residence and saw two adult males fighting in the living room. One of the males was holding a knife and the other male was on top of him trying hold him down. Officers were able to secure both males inside the residence without incident.

Officers discovered that during the fight an 18 year old male suffered from a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his left arm. He was treated at Bronson Hospital and released. A firearm and a knife were recovered inside residence. A case is being submitted against the 18 year old male for Possession of Marijuana. A 22 year old male, who is a Kalamazoo resident, was taken into custody for Felonious Assault, Domestic Assault 1st, Felony Firearm, and Resisting & Obstructing. He was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail and is awaiting arraignment.

Three suspects arrested after reports of shots fired on Ada St

Kalamazoo, MI: On Wednesday, February 07, 2018 at approximately 3:15PM, Officers respond to reports of people shooting at each other near the intersection of Ada St. and Woodbury St. Upon arrival, all parties were gone. An investigation revealed minimal information; however an officer remained in the area and observed from afar. At approximately 4:00PM, this officer observed an arm of a person extend with a gun in hand from a white colored van traveling on Ada St. There were multiple shots fired.

A traffic stop was attempted and the vehicle fled. A pursuit ensued that ended in the dead in of Poplar Place on the south end of Kalamazoo. One person ran from the vehicle and attempted to ditch a handgun in a nearby trash dumpster. Another person ran from the vehicle that maintained possession of another handgun. A third person remained in the vehicle.

The suspects, a 30 year old male, 25 year old male and 19 year old female are all Kalamazoo residents. They were all taken into custody. No assault victims were located. The suspects in this incident are charged with multiple weapons and driving offenses. All suspects were lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

E. Emerson St Shooting Investigation

November 9, 2017 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

On November 9, 2017, at approximately 6:40am, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the call of multiple gunshots in the 100 Block of E. Emerson. On arrival officers found multiple victims suffering gunshot wounds. The incident is currently being investigated by the Kalamazoo Public Safety Operations Division and Criminal Investigation Division. The suspect in the shooting is accounted for and there is no immediate danger to the public.

Update #1: On arrival to the call of shots fired officers located three gunshot victims. One adult male, one adult female and a child. The male and the female have been pronounced deceased by medical personnel. The child is listed in critical condition and life saving measures are currently underway.

Update #2: On November 9th, 2017, at approximately 6:40am, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to a 911 call of multiple gunshots in the 100 block of E. Emerson St. As officers arrived they encountered a traumatic scene involving three victims, all suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers immediately began lifesaving measures, securing the scene, and initiating an investigation. It was later learned, Nicholas Allen Mitchell, a 40 year old Kalamazoo resident had an argument with the mother of his child, Ms. Julina Gale Gibson, a 30 year old Kalamazoo resident.

During this altercation, Mr. Mitchell is believed to have produced a gun, shooting his 4 year old son, Nicholas Jeffrey Mitchell, Ms. Gibson, and then turning the gun on himself. Ms. Gibson and Mr. Mitchell Jr. were pronounced dead shortly after officers were called to the scene. Nicholas Jeffery Mitchell (4year old) succumbed to his injuries late last night at Bronson Methodist Hospital.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety would like to extend our condolences to the surrounding family and friends of all involved in this horrific incident.

Shooting Investigation

August 13, 2017 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

On August 13, 2017, at approximately 3:51am, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to a report of a citizen shot in the 1300 block of Fox Ridge Dr. Public Safety Officers located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound lying on the ground. The 25 year old Kalamazoo resident was transported to Bronson hospital with life threatening injuries. Public Safety Officers are still on scene investigating this crime. There is no suspect information at this time.
