Traffic stop leads to recovery of drugs and a firearm

On November 14, 2016 at approximately 0030 hours Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer Sean Szekely conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near S. Rose Street near Wall Street. During the investigation a backseat passenger was found to have cocaine on his person. Lying on the floor near where the backseat passenger was sitting was a loaded 9mm handgun that was stolen out of Kalamazoo County. The 22 year old Kalamazoo male was arrested for Possession of Cocaine, CCW, Possession of a Stolen Firearm and Felony Firearm.

The driver of the vehicle initially lied to officers about his name. When officers learned the driver’s real identity he was found to have 9 outstanding warrants for his arrest. The driver, a 21 year old male from Battle Creek was arrested on the 9 outstanding warrants, CCW, Felony Firearm, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Possession of a Firearm While Intoxicated, Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated, and Obstruction by Disguise.

Driver flees on foot after an accident injuring two people

Kalamazoo, MI: On October 29, 2016, officers from Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the area of W Vine and S Rose regarding a personal injury accident. Upon arrival, officers located two females that had been injured in the accident. The accident investigation showed that the suspect vehicle ran a red light and struck the driver’s side of their vehicle. Witnesses indicated the suspect / at-fault driver fled on foot. A K-9 track was conducted that lead to the discovery of several of the suspect’s articles of clothing and suspected drugs that had been discarded by the fleeing suspect. However, the suspect was not located.

The suspect has been identified as a 36 year old male Kalamazoo resident who is already wanted on two outstanding warrants. The occupants of the other vehicle were transported to the hospital for treatment, their injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.

House fire extinguished in 800 block of S Rose St

Kalamazoo, MI: On Wednesday, June 29th, 2016 at approximately 1643 hours, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the 800 Block of S. Rose for a report of a house on fire.

Public Safety Officers arrived on scene within minutes of the call and found the front of the residence heavily involved in fire. Fire suppression efforts were conducted and the blaze was extinguished after approximately 30 minutes. No occupants were home at the time of the incident and no civilians or firefighters were injured. Damage was limited the front porch, living room and 1st floor area of the home. The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation by the Fire Marshall’s office.
