Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested

Kalamazoo, MI:  On Sunday, April 10, 2017, at approximately 2:00 A.M., Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to an armed robbery in the 100 block of W. Lovell.  The victim was walking alone when he was approached by a subject with a handgun.  The suspect demanded the victim’s wallet and keys and said he would shoot the victim if he did not comply.  The victim gave the items to the suspect who then fled on foot.

Officers responding to the call quickly established a perimeter and a K9 officer was called to the scene.  As the K9 officer was beginning the track, an officer on the perimeter observed the suspect crossing Park Street in the 500 block heading west.  A short foot pursuit ensued and the suspect was quickly apprehended.  A stolen handgun was recovered as was the victim’s wallet and keys.

The suspect is a 25 year old Kalamazoo resident.  He was arrested for armed robbery along with multiple other felonies.  Nobody was injured during this incident.

Home invasion arrest leads to the recovery of firearm

Kalamazoo, MI: On March 18, 2017, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of E Cork St regarding a robbery in progress. KDPS dispatchers advised that the suspect used a handgun during the incident and fled the scene. Officers set up a perimeter and made contact with the victims to gather additional information.

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were familiar with the suspects in the case and searched the area surrounding the Edison neighborhood. Kalamazoo Public Safety officers located both suspects on a porch in the 1400 block of Lay Blvd. They were both taken into custody without incident or injury. Consent was given to search the porch however the firearm was not located.

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers gathered information from interviews and retraced the steps of the suspects. Officers utilized a Kalamazoo Public Safety K-9 and searched the 2200 block of Miller Rd (Hays Park). The K-9 tracked the suspects and located a loaded .22 caliber handgun in the wooded area around Hays Park. The details surrounding the firearm are still being investigated.

The suspects, a 19 year old Kalamazoo resident and a 17 year old Kalamazoo resident, were arrested and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail and will face charges of Home Invasion and CCW.

Two suspects arrested for armed robbery

March 16, 2017 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

Kalamazoo, MI: On March 11th, 2017 at approximately 18:43 hours, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were dispatched to the Hungry Howies, 3036 Portage Rd, regarding an armed robbery that had occurred. Upon arrival, officers found that a male threatened the manager, advising he was a victim of an armed robbery the night before, and the pizza delivery guy was the suspect. The victim told the manager he was staying at the Motel 6 on Vanrick, and wanted his money back. The victim had not called the police to report the robbery.

Officers responded to the Motel 6 to confirm the alleged robbery had occurred. The victim described the assailant as being the same guy who had delivered pizza to him about (3) three hours prior to the robbery. Officers were able to develop probable cause after speaking with the victim and the manager of Hungry Howies.

Several officers from the Operations Division, C.O.P.S. Division, and the Criminal Investigation Division were able to locate and arrest Alonzo Jawaun Wink, 23 year old male from the Flint area, for the robbery.

Detectives continued to investigate the robbery, developing another suspect. Donqueal Levon Turner, 18 year old male from Kalamazoo, was arrested on March 15th, and arraigned on the 16th for the robbery. This investigation is continuing as there was a third individual involved with this robbery.

Juvenile arrested for unarmed robbery

March 11, 2017 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

On March, 11, 2017, approximately 5:05 PM Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to a report of an unarmed robbery in the area of Reed and High St. The victim reported that while walking in the area, a car stopped and several juveniles exited it. A male juvenile walked up to the victim and ripped her purse off her shoulder and ran back to the vehicle. A witness was able to give detailed information on the vehicle. A Public Safety Sergeant and Officers located the suspect vehicle in the 800 block of S Rose St. Officers attempted to make contact with a 16 year old male juvenile and a 15 year old male juvenile who both ran upon seeing the police. They were quickly apprehended and the victim’s purse was located and returned to her.

A 16 year old male was arrested for unarmed robbery and resisting and obstructing. He was lodged at the juvenile home. A 15 year old was turned over to his legal guardian and will be facing the charges of resisting and obstructing.

Suspect arrested after attempted armed robbery on Pearl St

Kalamazoo, MI: On Tuesday February 28th, 2017, at approximately 12:40 a.m., Kalamazoo Pubic Safety Officers were dispatched to a report of an attempted robbery in the 500 block of Pearl Street. The two victims were leaving a house in the area when they were approached by a male. The male attempted to rob the victims, producing and unknown style handgun. The victims were in their vehicle at the time of the robbery and sped off before the suspect could take any property from them. They called 911 using a cell phone and Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were able to quickly converge on the location of the robbery. An observant Public Safety Officer observed 2 males, one of which matched the description of the armed suspect, on Cedar near Pearl Street. The victim positively identified the male and he was arrested on Attempted Armed Robbery charges. The suspect was not found in possession of the gun at the time of his arrest. The second male that was with the suspect was arrested on a probation violation. Officers conducted a thorough search for the gun, including the use of a police K9; however, no weapon was located.

The 17 year old suspect was lodged at Kalamazoo County Jail. Kalamazoo Public Safety is still investigating this incident. This robbery does not appear related to the robbery earlier in the evening on W. Vine.
