Firearm located after fight

Kalamazoo, MI: On January 12, 2017, at approximately 8:05 PM, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were dispatched to a fight inside the Family Dollar, located at 1261 Portage St. Upon arrival, officers were quickly informed that the suspect was seen with a gun getting into a white minivan, which left the area. A short time later PSO Werkema located the vehicle close-by and he attempted a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle failed to stop and fled the area.

The suspect vehicle was located a short time later unoccupied by PSO Day. A perimeter was set up and a K9 track was conducted. Two occupants of the vehicle were located and detained. However, the suspect was not located. During the investigation officers located a loaded firearm, marijuana and several prescription pills in the suspect vehicle. No arrests have been made at this time.

Armed robbery suspect arrested

November 29, 2016 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

Kalamazoo, MI: On 11/28/16 at approx. 1851 hrs, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded to the area of Portage and E Stockbridge for a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred. A 23 year old male and 19 year old female were sitting in a vehicle that was parked at a local business. They had come there to meet up with an unknown male to sell him some property after communicating via Facebook. While the two were waiting, a male got into the vehicle and robbed them at gunpoint. The male suspect then fled on foot.

Using information provided by the victims, and security footage from a nearby business, KDPS officers were able to identify the suspect as a 17 year old Kalamazoo resident. A short time later, officers were checking the area when they located the suspect, and arrested him without further incident. The man is currently being held at the Kalamazoo County Jail for the charge of armed robbery.

Man shot during drug deal – suspect in custody

This is an update for the following news releases:

On Friday, October 28, 2016, Jackson was taken into custody at approximately 8:30 pm EST in Indianapolis, by the Indiana State Police. Jackson was in possession of a handgun and more marijuana. He was arrested without incident.

It is unknown at this time when Jackson will be extradited back to Michigan as he will be facing the weapon and drug charges in Indiana.

Man shot during drug deal – suspect update

Kalamazoo Public Safety is requesting the public’s help in locating the second person involved in the shooting from yesterday. Jamar Jawon Jackson, 09-13-90, 5’9″, 165 lbs, who has relatives in Indianapolis as well as Kalamazoo, is considered to be armed. There were two weapons used yesterday and only one was recovered at the scene. Please call 911 if you see Mr. Jackson so he can be held accountable for his actions.

Man shot during drug deal

Kalamazoo, MI: On Wednesday, October 26th, 2016, at approximately 3:42 P.M., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the 600 block of Portage St in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim down on the ground near a local business, from apparent gunshot wounds. Officers gave immediate medical attention. The victim was transported to Bronson Hospital where he was treated and released for minor injuries. The victim, a 27 year old Kalamazoo resident, admitted to officers that he was there to sell a quantity of marijuana. The victim advised a gun was pulled on him during the transaction, and he was ultimately shot.

Officers from the COPS Division were in the area when the shooting was reported. An 18 year old male matching the description of one of the suspects involved, was detained not far from the scene. A police canine was called to the scene, and was able to locate a gun hidden near a business. The suspect, an 18 year-old Kalamazoo resident is currently lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on several drug and weapon offense charges.

Detectives working the case were able to develop a second suspect involved in this shooting, and are currently searching for him. A further update on this individual will be given later today.
