1900 Portage St Armed Robbery

On November 20, 2017, at approximately 3:25pm, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the call of an armed robbery in the 1900 Block of Portage St. On arrival officers made contact with witnesses that observed the suspect run into a house, also in the 1900 Block of Portage St. This house was in very close proximity to the Washington Writers Academy School. The school was notified and advised to go into lockdown for the safety of the students. Approximately 15 minutes later the suspect in the armed robbery was taken into custody without incident. Once the scene was determined to be safe the school was advised they could release the lockdown. Officers are still on scene conducting the investigation but there is no immediate danger to the public.

Portage St Homicide Investigation

Update: The victim from this incident has been identified as Kalamazoo resident, Gabriel Juarez-Montanez (31yrs). This incident is still under investigation. On July 25, 2017, at approximately 02:05 A.M., Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to the 1300 block of Portage St. regarding a shooting. Upon arrival officers found a 31 year old male Kalamazoo resident in the parking lot behind the Edison House Apartments suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to Bronson Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Witnesses at the scene reported seeing one or two suspects fleeing the scene on foot. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation. No arrests have been made.

Car crashes into house

Kalamazoo, MI: On Monday, May 15, 2017 at 1:20 a.m. Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to 3800 Blk of Portage Rd, regarding a vehicle that crashed into a house.

KDPS officers responded and located a car that had crashed into the corner of a house. The driver, a 19 year old Kalamazoo resident, sustained injuries to her head and face. No other occupants were in the vehicle. The driver was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The house sustained structural damage but none of the occupants of the home were injured.

The investigation is still on-going in determining the cause of the crash.

Crash Causes Road Closure

Portage St is now back open.

Kalamazoo, MI: On Tuesday May 9, 2017 at approximately 3:07 am, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the intersection of Portage St and Stockbridge Avenue for a report of a traffic crash. Upon arrival officers found a power pole that had been sheared off by a vehicle that had left the scene. The crash caused a live power line to fall onto and block Portage St. The suspect vehicle was located a short distance from the initial scene. An investigation was conducted and the driver of the vehicle was eventually arrested for Operating while impaired. The 22 year old Kalamazoo resident was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Portage Road, between Stockbridge Ave. and Egleston Ave., remains closed until crews can remove and repair the power line. The road is estimated to be closed until approximately 7:00 am.

Three suspects arrested for unarmed robbery on Portage St

January 25, 2017 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

Kalamazoo, MI: On 1-25-17 at approximately 2:34am officers responded to the 1200 block of Portage St in reference to two Kalamazoo residents that were robbed by three individuals.

Both residents were walking southbound on Portage St when they were confronted by three individuals that were walking northbound. Both residents were physically assaulted and had their cell phones, purse, and wallet stolen. The suspects then fled on foot.

A KDPS K9 responded to the scene and a K9 track was conducted. The track led to a garage in the 1200 block of Race St. The suspects, two 17 year old males and an 18 year old male were found hiding in the garage and taken into custody. The stolen property was recovered. During this investigation a vehicle in the 1100 block of Race was also found to have been broken into by one of the suspects. All three males were arrested for Unarmed Robbery, Conspiracy to commit Unarmed Robbery, and an additional charge of Larceny from Vehicle was added to one of the 17 year old males.
