Fatal Shooting Investigation

On April 7, 2018 at approximately 4:00 am, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were dispatched to the 900 block of N Burdick regarding the report of a shooting.

Responding Officers arrived and located one victim who appeared to have been struck by gunfire. The victim, a 26 year old Kalamazoo resident was rushed to a local hospital, however was later pronounced dead after succumbing to their injuries.

No further information is available at this time.

Homicide Investigation

UPDATE:

On May 21, 2017, at approximately 4:47pm, Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to shots fired in the area of the 1300 block of N. Burdick St. When officers arrived, they located a male with a gunshot wound. Officers began life saving measures on scene, and continued while transporting the victim to Bronson Hospital. The 36 year old male was pronounced deceased at Bronson Hospital. The male has been identified as Marlon Lamar Morgan, a 36 year old Kalamazoo resident. The investigation is on-going at this time.

On May, 21, 2017, at approximately 4:47pm Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to multiple 911calls of several shots being fired in the 1300blk of N Burdick St. Responding officers located a male in the 1300blk that had suffered a gunshot wound. Life saving efforts were attempted and the 36 year old male victim died at Bronson Hospital.

Approximately 30 minutes later a second victim of the shooting arrived at Bronson Hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Kalamazoo Public Safety is not releasing any more information on the homicide victim at this time. This is an active homicide investigation and no suspects are in custody.

Two stolen cars recovered, juvenile suspect arrested

On January, 14 2017 at 09:52 Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to the 1000 block of Woodward Ave for a stolen auto complaint. The victim had left the keys in the ignition and doors unlocked. At that the time an unknown suspect stole the vehicle. On January, 15 2017 at 13:51 the vehicle was located unoccupied in the area of Dunkley and Park St. A citizen called to report that three female juveniles were seen leaving the vehicle. Officers made contact with all three and recovered the keys to the stolen vehicle. As officers continued to investigate they learned a juvenile male had originally stolen the vehicle and given the keys to the three juvenile females.

On January, 15 2017 while a citizen was attending church in the 600 block of N Burdick his vehicle was stolen from a parking lot. Once again the vehicle was unlocked with the keys in plain view. A citizen spotted a juvenile male driving the vehicle and observed the vehicle crash in a yard in the 100 block of W Frank St. The citizen followed the juvenile and officers made contact with the suspect in the 200 block of Norway. Keys to the stolen vehicle were recovered. The male juvenile was arrested for stealing both vehicles and has been lodged at the juvenile home for unauthorized driving away both automobiles.

Kalamazoo Public Safety would like to thank both citizens for being alert and calling in the criminal activity they observed. Kalamazoo Public Safety would also like to remind all citizens to remember to remove their car keys and lock their car doors.

Suspect arrested for making a bomb threat

October 7, 2016 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

Kalamazoo, MI: On October 7, 2016, at about 8:15 PM, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were dispatched to 459 N. Burdick Street, the Kalamazoo Transportation Center, regarding a bomb threat. A Metro Transit bus had arrived at the KTC, and passengers were disembarking. The bus driver was assisting passengers when he heard a male passenger say that there was a bomb on board. The bus driver cleared the bus and contacted the downtown beat officer, who was already on scene investigating another unrelated incident. When additional officers arrived, they cleared the surrounding area to ensure safety in the event a device was located.

The Bomb Squad was activated with an on-duty bomb technician responding within minutes. Following standard procedures, the bus was cleared, and no devices of any kind were found. The area was immediately opened to allow travelers to resume their travel plans.

Officers determined that the suspect had boarded another bus to flee the scene. Officers located the bus on Gull Road and detained the suspect. Based on the investigation, the suspect, a 47 year old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested for making a Bomb Threat and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Concealed Weapon Arrest

September 5, 2016 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

On September 5, 2016, at about 0449 hours, Dispatch received two reports of 6-8 shots fired in the 1300 block of N. Burdick Street. Public Safety Officers responded to the area and located the offender in a parking lot. Officers ordered the offender to stop. The offender ran and was taken into custody about two blocks later. During the foot chase, the officers observed movements indicating that he had thrown something.

A Public Safety K9 responded and conducted an article search to try and find what was thrown. The K9 located a stolen .25 semi-automatic handgun in a tall grassy area where the offender was taken into custody. The offender a 20-year-old Kalamazoo resident was arrested and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on charges of Resisting an Officer, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and an outstanding warrant.
