Tray Ln homicide suspect identified as Zachary Michael Patten

Update: The victim from this incident has been identified as Kalamazoo resident, Graciela Portillo-Esparza, (31 yrs).

Update: Zachary Michael Patten is in custody. He was located in South Bend, Indiana.


Kalamazoo, MI: On July 20th 2017, at approximately 9:38pm, officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to a report of a shooting in the 1800 block of Tray Ln. Arriving officers located a 31 year old female suffering from a gunshot wound. Life saving measures were initiated however, the victim died on scene. The suspect fled the area in a vehicle.

The suspect has been identified as Zachary Michael Patten, W/M, 11/12/1984, 5’11, 185. Patten was last seen driving a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica grey/silver plate CLN 8244. The vehicle has a “skeleton family” sticker on the rear of the vehicle and a full size spare tire on one of the front wheels.

Mr. Patten is also suspected of being involved in a homicide in Constantine Mi. a short time after the Kalamazoo incident. St. Joe County Sheriff Department is handling that investigation.

Mr. Patten’s whereabouts is unknown at this time, he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Tray Ln Homicide Investigation

July 21, 2017 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

On July 20, 2017, at approximately 9:38pm, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 1800 block of Tray Ln. The first arriving officer immediately began to perform CPR on the victim. According to witnesses, the victim a 31 year old female Kalamazoo resident was shot after an argument, and died at the scene. The suspect then fled in a vehicle. This is an active investigation and the suspect is not in custody.

Homicide Investigation

UPDATE:

On May 21, 2017, at approximately 4:47pm, Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to shots fired in the area of the 1300 block of N. Burdick St. When officers arrived, they located a male with a gunshot wound. Officers began life saving measures on scene, and continued while transporting the victim to Bronson Hospital. The 36 year old male was pronounced deceased at Bronson Hospital. The male has been identified as Marlon Lamar Morgan, a 36 year old Kalamazoo resident. The investigation is on-going at this time.

On May, 21, 2017, at approximately 4:47pm Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to multiple 911calls of several shots being fired in the 1300blk of N Burdick St. Responding officers located a male in the 1300blk that had suffered a gunshot wound. Life saving efforts were attempted and the 36 year old male victim died at Bronson Hospital.

Approximately 30 minutes later a second victim of the shooting arrived at Bronson Hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Kalamazoo Public Safety is not releasing any more information on the homicide victim at this time. This is an active homicide investigation and no suspects are in custody.

Suspect in custody for the homicide on N Church St

April 12, 2017 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

Detectives from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety followed evidence and leads that led to the arrest of the person who fired the fatal shot that ended the life of Bernard Kye. The suspect, a 20 year-old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested without incident on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 around 7:45 pm. The name of the suspect will not be released until he is arraigned. We anticipate the arraignment to be sometime on Thursday, April 13.

We are requesting charges of felony murder, felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon at this time.

The second victim who sustained a gunshot to her leg is still in stable condition.

Update – Suspect Arraigned

Thursday afternoon, the suspect in the shooting death of Bernard Kye was arraigned on seven (7) counts. The charges against Kalamazoo resident Deonte Lamar Burdine, 5-3-96, include: open murder, assault with intent to murder, felon in possession of a firearm and 4 counts of felony firearm.  The bond for Burdine was denied.

We are still requesting witnesses to come forward with any information they may have as this investigation is still continuing. There may be useful video that was recorded during this incident that could aid in this investigation.

Update: 2 Shot in the 900 Block of N. Church St.

Kalamazoo, MI: On Monday April 10th , 2017 at approximately 6:20 P.M., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to a report of a fight and several shots fired. Upon arrival Officers located a 22 year old male that had been shot and a 40 year old female that had been shot in the leg. Officers conducted CPR on the male and he was transported to Bronson Hospital where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries. The female was transported to Borgess Hospital and is in stable condition and is expected to survive.

At this time, Public Safety Detectives are questioning two subjects believed to be involved in the incident. The incident is still active and the investigation is ongoing.

The deceased victim of the shooting has been identified as Bernard Andrew Kye, 3-1-95. The female victim will not be identified at this time. She is still in stable condition.
