Fatal Shooting Investigation Update

On April 7th, 2018 at approximately 4:00 am, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were dispatched to the 900 block of N Burdick regarding the report of a shooting.

Responding Officers arrived and located a victim who appeared to have been struck by gunfire. The subject was transported to Bronson Hospital however lifesaving measures were unsuccessful. The victim has been identified as Terrance Jaleel Swinney a twenty-six (26) year-old Kalamazoo resident.

Kalamazoo Public Safety extends our sincerest sympathy to Mr. Swinney’s family and friends.

Fatal Shooting Investigation

On April 7, 2018 at approximately 4:00 am, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were dispatched to the 900 block of N Burdick regarding the report of a shooting.

Responding Officers arrived and located one victim who appeared to have been struck by gunfire. The victim, a 26 year old Kalamazoo resident was rushed to a local hospital, however was later pronounced dead after succumbing to their injuries.

No further information is available at this time.

E. Emerson St Shooting Investigation

On November 9, 2017, at approximately 6:40am, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the call of multiple gunshots in the 100 Block of E. Emerson. On arrival officers found multiple victims suffering gunshot wounds. The incident is currently being investigated by the Kalamazoo Public Safety Operations Division and Criminal Investigation Division. The suspect in the shooting is accounted for and there is no immediate danger to the public.

Update #1: On arrival to the call of shots fired officers located three gunshot victims. One adult male, one adult female and a child. The male and the female have been pronounced deceased by medical personnel. The child is listed in critical condition and life saving measures are currently underway.

Update #2: On November 9th, 2017, at approximately 6:40am, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to a 911 call of multiple gunshots in the 100 block of E. Emerson St. As officers arrived they encountered a traumatic scene involving three victims, all suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers immediately began lifesaving measures, securing the scene, and initiating an investigation. It was later learned, Nicholas Allen Mitchell, a 40 year old Kalamazoo resident had an argument with the mother of his child, Ms. Julina Gale Gibson, a 30 year old Kalamazoo resident.

During this altercation, Mr. Mitchell is believed to have produced a gun, shooting his 4 year old son, Nicholas Jeffrey Mitchell, Ms. Gibson, and then turning the gun on himself. Ms. Gibson and Mr. Mitchell Jr. were pronounced dead shortly after officers were called to the scene. Nicholas Jeffery Mitchell (4year old) succumbed to his injuries late last night at Bronson Methodist Hospital.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety would like to extend our condolences to the surrounding family and friends of all involved in this horrific incident.

Portage St Homicide Investigation

Update: The victim from this incident has been identified as Kalamazoo resident, Gabriel Juarez-Montanez (31yrs). This incident is still under investigation. On July 25, 2017, at approximately 02:05 A.M., Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to the 1300 block of Portage St. regarding a shooting. Upon arrival officers found a 31 year old male Kalamazoo resident in the parking lot behind the Edison House Apartments suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to Bronson Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Witnesses at the scene reported seeing one or two suspects fleeing the scene on foot. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation. No arrests have been made.

Oakland Dr Homicide Investigation

Update: The victim from this incident has been identified as Battle Creek resident, Thomas Paul Anders, (21 yrs). This incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 269-337-8994 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.

Update: The person of interest in the photo has been identified. He is currently in custody on unrelated charges. 


On July 22, 2017, at approximately 02:15 A.M., Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to the 800 block of Oakland Dr. regarding a shooting. Upon arrival officers found a 21 year old male in the street with a gunshot wound to his torso. The victim was transported to Bronson Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the suspect shot the victim during an altercation and then fled on foot. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation. No arrests have been made.
