Kalamazoo, MI: On Thursday, October 19th, 2017 at approximately 11:38 a.m., an officer assigned to Loy Norrix High School reported multiple fights in the cafeteria. A total of twenty officers from Kalamazoo Public Safety and Portage Public Safety responded to assist in quelling the disturbance which had spread to other locations in the school. The students fighting failed to adhere to the officer’s orders to stop, resulting in a deployment of pepper spray. One student reported that a gun was seen however this claim has been unsubstantiated. One student was arrested for fighting. LIFE EMS was on scene and treated subjects exposed to the pepper spray. Officers are working with KPS staff to identify students involved and determine the appropriate charges. Public Safety officers will remain on the campus until the end of the school day.
