Armed robbery suspect arrested

Kalamazoo, MI: On 11/28/16 at approx. 1851 hrs, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded to the area of Portage and E Stockbridge for a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred. A 23 year old male and 19 year old female were sitting in a vehicle that was parked at a local business. They had come there to meet up with an unknown male to sell him some property after communicating via Facebook. While the two were waiting, a male got into the vehicle and robbed them at gunpoint. The male suspect then fled on foot.

Using information provided by the victims, and security footage from a nearby business, KDPS officers were able to identify the suspect as a 17 year old Kalamazoo resident. A short time later, officers were checking the area when they located the suspect, and arrested him without further incident. The man is currently being held at the Kalamazoo County Jail for the charge of armed robbery.

Structure fire at 1601 E Stockbridge Ave

On Tuesday September 20th, 2016 around 10:54pm., Kalamazoo Public Safety was dispatched on a report of a structure fire at 1601 E Stockbridge, Jacks Party Store. Upon arrival officers discovered heavy smoke emanating from a second floor apartment. There was a resident screaming for help from apartment number 1. Officers were quickly able to place a ladder at the base of the window and rescue that citizen. During a search of the building a second citizen was rescued from an upstairs apartment. The fire was extinguished within 35 minutes of the original dispatch. The business was not damaged from the fire and the Red Cross assisted a resident of apartment number 2. Damage to the building was contained to apartment number 2 and a small section of the roof. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

E Stockbridge Ave House Fire

Kalamazoo, MI: On Friday, September 2, 2016, at approximately 5:15P.M., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 900 block of East Stockbridge Avenue in reference to a house fire. Upon arrival, officers found heavy fire in a bedroom area of the main floor of the multi-family apartment home.

Fire suppression activities were started on the first floor but the fire quickly spread to the third floor of the building when fire crews had to exit the structure and fight the fire from the exterior due to safety concerns. Public Safety Officers were on scene for approximately 4 hours. The house sustained heavy damage. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Residential dryer fire extinguished, occupants alerted by functioning smoke detectors

Kalamazoo, MI: On Tuesday July, 19, 2016 at approximately 3:28 am, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the 1500 block of East Stockbridge for a report of a house on fire.

Public Safety Officer Jerry Lobretto was first to arrive on scene and located the fire at the rear of the structure in a laundry room. Lobretto broke a window to quickly gain access to the fire and utilized a fire extinguisher to attack the fire as other Public Safety Officers were arriving.

The fire was contained to the one room, where a dryer had caught fire. The home suffered smoke damage and the residents were displaced. The Red Cross was contacted and they responded to assist the family. The occupants of the home were alerted by the  within the home.
