Public Safety investigates two drunk driving accidents

September 18, 2016 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

Kalamazoo, MI: During the morning hours of September 18, 2016, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to two separate single car motor vehicle accidents. Both accidents involved lone occupant drivers that were to found to have been drinking and driving.

The first accident was reported at 0753 hours in the area of Duke and Denway. Public Safety Officers quickly responded to find a pickup truck that had drove though a small storage shed. The driver was still in the vehicle, uninjured, trying to negotiate his pickup truck out of the building. Due to the truck being lodged on top of snow maintenance equipment, he was stuck. The preliminary investigation led to probable cause to arrest the driver for Operating a Motor Vehicle while intoxicated.

The second accident occurred at 0832 hours in the entrance of the Dover Hills Apartment Complex. Public Safety Officers with a full complement of fire and rescue responded to a single motor vehicle roll-over accident. The lone occupant and driver of the vehicle was found outside of his vehicle, with minor injuries. He was transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Through the investigation it was found the driver, who was under the influence of alcohol, attempted to negotiate a 90 degree right turn at a high rate of speed. The turn was non-negotiable and the vehicle collided with the entrance sign to the apartment complex which included a very large boulder. The force of the impact sent the large boulder, which exceeded 800 pounds, across the roadway causing the vehicle to flip onto its roof. The preliminary investigation led to probable cause to arrest the driver for Operating a Motor Vehicle while intoxicated and open intoxicants.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety strongly encourages motorists to not drink and drive.
