Pedestrian Struck and Injured in Hit and Run

Kalamazoo, MI: On Saturday, September 30, 2017 at approximately 02:15 AM, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded to the 1400 block of Lafayette Avenue for a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers found a 21 year old male victim suffering from severe head trauma. The victim was transported to Bronson Hospital and he is currently in critical condition. The suspect vehicle fled the scene prior to officers arriving. Officers canvassed the surrounding areas and were able to locate the suspect vehicle parked in the 2800 block of Westbrook. Shortly after locating the vehicle, officers observed the suspect in the area. During the investigation the suspect was eventually arrested for OWI Causing Serious Impairment. The 21 year old Kalamazoo man was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail and is awaiting arraignment.

Citizen Struck by a Vehicle

September 5, 2017 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

Kalamazoo, MI: On Sunday, September 3, 2017, at approximately 1250 AM, Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle on E. Ransom near Walbridge. Upon arrival, officers found a victim lying in the street with head trauma.

The preliminary investigation shows that the suspect vehicle was traveling eastbound on E. Ransom St. near Walbridge St. when it struck the victim who was walking in the roadway. The 41 year-old, male victim, was transported to Bronson where he is currently listed in critical condition. The suspect, a 38 year old Kalamazoo woman, was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail for suspicion of Operating While Intoxicated.

Two Car Traffic Crash

On July 25, 2017, at approximately 11:12pm, Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to a traffic accident between two vehicles in the 3000 block of South Westnedge Ave. On arrival, officers located a cargo van that had rolled over on its side with three occupants inside. Extrication equipment was used to free the three occupants of the van. One of the occupants of the van had a limb that became lodged between the metal frame and the undercarriage of the vehicle. The sole occupant of the other involved vehicle did not require extrication. Two passengers from the cargo van and one passenger from the other vehicle were transported to Bronson Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

One person, a 24 year old male, was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated and an unrelated outstanding warrant for OWI. He was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail. Alcohol and speed are believed to be a factor in the crash.

Crash Causes Road Closure

Portage St is now back open.

Kalamazoo, MI: On Tuesday May 9, 2017 at approximately 3:07 am, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the intersection of Portage St and Stockbridge Avenue for a report of a traffic crash. Upon arrival officers found a power pole that had been sheared off by a vehicle that had left the scene. The crash caused a live power line to fall onto and block Portage St. The suspect vehicle was located a short distance from the initial scene. An investigation was conducted and the driver of the vehicle was eventually arrested for Operating while impaired. The 22 year old Kalamazoo resident was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Portage Road, between Stockbridge Ave. and Egleston Ave., remains closed until crews can remove and repair the power line. The road is estimated to be closed until approximately 7:00 am.

Firearm recovered during drunk driving investigation

Kalamazoo, MI: On Saturday, January 28, 2017, at approximately 4:05 a.m., Kalamazoo Pubic Safety Officers on patrol in the area of Douglas Avenue and Paterson Street observed a passenger vehicle exceeding the posted speed limit. Officers were able to catch up with the vehicle, and conducted a traffic stop in the 1300 block of Ravine Road. During contact with the driver of the vehicle, officers determined the driver was possibly intoxicated. The driver of the vehicle initially refused to exit the vehicle. After convincing the driver to exit, she was arrested for Resisting and Obstructing and Operating While Intoxicated. The passenger of the vehicle was found to have an outstanding Felony and misdemeanor warrants and was arrested. During a search of the vehicle a loaded handgun was located under the passengers seat.

As a result of this investigation a 28 year old Kalamazoo woman, and a 27 year old Kalamazoo man, were both arrested. The woman was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated, and Resist & Obstruct Police. The male was arrested for outstanding warrants and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. Both subjects were lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety would like to remind motorist of the dangers of impaired driving. According to the State of Michigan audits for the year 2015 Kalamazoo County had 285 alcohol related crashes. This number includes fatal, personal injury, and property damage crashes. Together through education and enforcement we as a community can reduce this number so that no one has to feel the effects of a loved one being involved with an alcohol related crash.
