On September 10, 2016, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers investigated four separate cases where counterfeit money was passed. The denominations included $100s and $20s. Although a casual observer may miss the “for motion picture use only” notice printed on the bills, they are difficult to detect. The bills are of a high quality and likely to easily be mistaken as real. Those passing the bills may also take additional steps to distract victims during the transaction.
Kalamazoo Public Safety encourages businesses and private persons to exercise caution in accepting denominations greater than $20 and to look for the notice. To learn how to authenticate your money visit https://uscurrency.gov to explore the security features found in U.S. currency.
No suspects have been identified at this time. These cases remain under investigation.
