During the early morning hours of July 30, 2016, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer Sean Szekely was investigating an unrelated call for service in the 500 block of Bryant Street when he noticed a suspicious vehicle driving in the area. Shortly after seeing the vehicle drive out of sight, Szekely heard approximately six gunshots come from the area where the vehicle was last observed.
PSO Szekely drove to the area to investigate and observed two subjects quickly exiting the vehicle near Belford and Vernon. When the officer attempted to make contact with the subjects, the vehicle sped away. PSO Szekely detained the subjects while responding officers located the vehicle leaving the area.
The vehicle was stopped and eventually searched. The search revealed a .40 caliber handgun. Officer’s began canvassing the scene and located several spent .40 caliber shell casings in the 1900 block of Belford. Through further investigation, information was obtained that the front seat passenger in the vehicle had fired the shots from the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle a 34 year old Kalamazoo resident was arrested for CCW, OWI, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of a Firearm While Intoxicated. The front seat passenger a 25 year old Kalamazoo resident was arrested for CCW, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Discharging a Firearm from a Vehicle. The back seat passenger, a 26 year old Kalamazoo resident was arrested for a violation of his parole restrictions. All three subjects were lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
