Traffic Stop Leads to Firearm Recovery

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Thursday, December 18th, 2020 an Officer with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 4100 Block of W Michigan Ave.  During the investigation, Officers suspected narcotic activity and requested the assistance of a K9 for a “free air” search.  The K9 alerted on the vehicle and a subsequent search of the vehicle revealed narcotics and an unregistered pistol. 

The suspect, identified as a 17-year-old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested for the weapons offense and was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Fire at Borgess Hospital

On 12/15/2020, at approximately 10:45 am, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety along with Kalamazoo Township Fire Department responded to Borgess Hospital for the report of an fire in the building. Officers arrived quickly and aided by the fire suppression system were able to extinguish the fire. There were no serious injuries and the incident is currently under investigation.

Shots fired into car

Shots fired into car

Kalamazoo, MI: On 12-04-2020 at approximately 4:02pm Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the intersection of W. Michigan Ave and N. Westnedge Ave regarding reports of gunshots being fired at a car. Witnesses stated that a male subject had fired gun shots into a car at this intersection and then left the area on foot. As Officers arrived in the area, the victim contacted Dispatch to report that he was shot at by a known subject.

A K-9 track for the suspect was done but the suspect was not located. Although the suspect was not located, there is no threat to the public at this time and this incident appears to be isolated as the victim and suspect are known to each other. The victim in this case was not injured but the vehicle he was in was struck by gunfire.

Armed Car Jacking Investigation

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Thursday, December 3, 2020 at approximately 8:00 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 500 block of Harding Place in reference to the report of a subject who was robbed of their property and vehicle at gun point.

Public safety officers arrived in the area to investigate.  The victim reported to officers that they had made arrangements on social media to meet up with an unknown person to purchase a gaming device that was advertised for sale. 

When the victim arrived in the suggested meeting area they were approached by several people, one of which had a handgun pointed at them.  The suspects then demanded money and possession of the victim’s vehicle.

The suspects involved fled the area in the victim’s vehicle and have not been located. No suspect information is available currently.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety would like to remind those utilizing social media such as Facebook, Let it Go, Craigslist, Snap Chat and the like to exercise caution when considering to give out personal information, arranging to meet unknown individuals, or exchange money for goods and services.

Shots fire one person injured

Shots fired; one person injured.

Kalamazoo, MI:

On November 27th, 2020 at approximately 3:15 pm, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded to the 400 block of Reed Ave for a report of shots fired. As officers were checking the area, dispatch received a call from an area emergency room reporting that a victim had arrived. The victim, a 17 year old Kalamazoo man, said that he was sitting inside a parked car when he was suddenly struck by gunfire. The suspect left in an unknown direction. Based on the information provided by the victim, officers located the shooting scene, and recovered evidence of the crime. As of this time, the suspect has not been located or identified. The victim is being treated, and is in stable condition.
