Bank Robbery

Kalamazoo, MI: On February 12, 2020 Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 100 block of E. Michigan Ave, Chase Bank, for a report of a robbery in progress. A male suspect, entered the bank at approximately 4:30 pm, and demanded money from a bank employee. No weapon was displayed by the suspect during the robbery. The suspect left on foot a short time after entering the business. The suspect has not been located at this time. An unknown amount of cash was taken.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male approximately six foot tall with an average build, with black hair and facial hair. He was wearing a dark colored hooded coat, black shirt, a black baseball hat (backwards) and several gold colored chains around his neck.

Armed Robbery-Suspect Arrested

Kalamazoo, MI:  On January 24th, 2020 at 10:55pm, Public Safety Officers responded to 400 Dillingham Lane for a report of an armed robbery.  The victim reported she was approached by a male who pointed a gun at her head and demanded her property.  He fled the scene with her purse and cellphone.

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded, and K-9 Nero was called in to track the suspect.  The K-9 tracked to an apartment building located in the 600 block of Carrington Court.  The suspect was found hiding in a common-area storage closet.  He was arrested and found to be in possession of the victim’s purse as well as the handgun used in the incident.  The suspect, a 21-year-old male from Kalamazoo was lodged at Kalamazoo County Jail with charges of Armed Robbery, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony and Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer. The suspect was also a parole absconder.

Firearm Recovered After Search Warrant

Kalamazoo, MI:

On January 9th, 2020 at approximately 0100 hrs, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officers conducted an illegal drug investigation surrounding a business in the 700 block of Douglas. As a result of this investigation a search warrant was sought and later served.

While actively investigating this incident over ten occupants exited the business. Each occupant was temporarily detained and identified. Two of these occupants had outstanding warrants and were later transported to Kalamazoo County Jail. After the business was searched a firearm, ammunition, and drug paraphernalia was seized. Charges are being requested regarding drug and firearm violations.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety continues to encourage citizens to report crime in their respective neighborhoods. Anyone having information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 488-8911 or Silent Observer at 343-2100.

Larcenies from Vehicles

Kalamazoo, MI

On January 7, 2020, at approximately 12:21a.m., the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) responded to the 1500 block of Kickapoo Ct for a report of several subjects breaking into vehicles. As officers responded to the area, several subjects fitting the description given by the reportee were located and subsequently fled on foot. KDPS Officers flooded the area and apprehended five juveniles believed to be involved in the larcenies from vehicles. One of the juveniles apprehended was involved in the theft of a vehicle earlier in the night.

Officers recovered suspected stolen property during the investigation and are attempting to locate the victims involved. KDPS believes that there are additional victims that have not been identified yet and request that anyone who suspects their vehicle was broken into in the area of Kickapoo Ct to contact KDPS.

As a result of this investigation, two juveniles were taken into custody and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home. The other three juveniles were released to guardians.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety would like to remind citizens to lock their vehicles and not to leave valuables unattended inside.

ARMED ROBBERY

Kalamazoo, MI:

On December 21st, at approximately 9:15 pm, an armed robbery occurred in the 1100 block of Oak St. The victim was walking in the area when she was approached by the suspect. The suspect struck the victim in the head and face with the butt of the handgun causing injury. The suspect then fled with the victim’s purse, running south on Oak St. Officers set a perimeter and utilized a police K9 to track the suspect, but the suspect was not located.

The suspect was described as a black male, 5’6”-5’10”, weighing 150 lb with a line of hair along the chin. He was wearing black pants and a grey jacket armed with a dark semi-automatic handgun.

The victim was taken to an area hospital with injuries sustained from being struck with the bottom of the gun.
