Fatal Shooting Investigation

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Sunday, April 11, 2021 at approximately 3:30 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the report of a subject who had been struck by gunfire inside of a residence in the 1000 block of North Park Street.

Officers arrived at the residence and located a victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.  Officers provided medical treatment and transferred care to EMS personnel.  The victim was transported to a local hospital where they later died as a result of their injuries.

The victim in this incident is not being identified at this time, pending family notifications.

Kalamazoo Public Safety offers its condolences to any family or friends who have been impacted by this tragic event.

Arrest Made While Investigating Report of Gun Fire

Kalamazoo, Michigan: 

On Tuesday, February 23, 2021 officers from Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to the 1200 block of Washington Street due to numerous calls of gunfire in the area.  Responding officers were provided information from an alert citizen who observed several subjects running towards a vehicle immediately after the gunfire was heard.

Officers approached the area and observed a vehicle that had lost control on the icy roadway and struck a snowbank and a tree. Several of the vehicle occupants attempted to leave the area immediately after observing officers.   Two occupants were immediately detained and a third fled on foot.

Officers pursued the fleeing occupant and apprehended him after a brief foot chase.  During the foot pursuit, the subject discarded a firearm in a snowbank.   This individual was arrested on charges of resisting and obstructing as well as several weapons violations.  He was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile home.  Additional drug and ordinance violation charges are being requested against the other involved parties.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

Shooting Investigation 1000 Cobb Avenue

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Friday, February 12, 2021 at approximately 1:45 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to multiple reports of gunfire in the 1000 block of Cobb Avenue.

Officers arrived in the area and located evidence consistent with the above report.  While officers were investigating a victim arrived at a local hospital suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim’s injuries are considered non-life threatening.

No suspect information is available at this time.

Drive-by Shooting Strikes Vehicle Occupant

Kalamazoo, Michigan:

On Friday, February 5, 2021 at approximately 3:00 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the report of gunfire near the 700 block of Cobb Avenue.  Responding officers arrived in the area to investigate the report and located a victim inside of their vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. 

Officers rendered aid to the victim, conducted interviews, and canvassed the surrounding area for evidence and witnesses.  Information was received that an occupant of a separate motor vehicle discharged a firearm multiple times at the victim’s vehicle, striking both the vehicle and victim.  No suspect information is available currently.

The victim was transported to a local hospital. The injuries sustained are not considered life-threatening.

Kitchen Fire at Local Business

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Thursday, January 28, 2021 at approximately 2:45 p.m., Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the 600 block of East Michigan for the report of a structure fire.  Upon officer’s arrival, they located smoke and flames coming from the kitchen of a local business.

Employees at the business were able to utilize on-sight fire suppression equipment prior to evacuating the business; however, this did not extinguish the fire.  Public safety officers arrived and were able to bring the fire under control within five minutes.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of this fire is under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s office.
