Suspects in Recent Home Invasions Identified and Arrested

Kalamazoo, MI:

On October 20, 2022, at approximately 2:30 am officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were called to the 1700 block of Knollwood Avenue by a resident that was aware of recent break-ins in the area.  The resident reported that they witnessed two subjects attempting to break into a home.

When officers arrived in the area they located two suspects who fled on foot, upon sight of the police.  Both suspects were quickly located and arrested with the assistance of a KDPS canine.

During the investigation, it was determined that these suspects are likely responsible for numerous home invasions that have taken place in the campus area recently. Detectives continued to investigate and uncovered evidence of additional home invasions that had not yet been reported to the police. Several thousand dollars of additional stolen property was located. Through this investigation, a third suspect was also located and arrested.

KDPS would like to acknowledge and thank our community members for their assistance and timely reporting of their observations which lead to the apprehension of the suspects involved.

KDPS reminds residents to keep valuables out of sight and locked up safely.  Always, double-check that your vehicles and homes are locked and secure.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Bank Robbery

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at approximately 1:00 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the report of an armed robbery at the Kalsee Credit Union at 3121 Portage Street.

Arriving officers made contact with employees who reported that a man entered the financial institution wearing a mask and presented a note which made threats to the employees and demanded money.  The suspect was reported to have fled the bank on foot.

Officers and detectives with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety are actively investigating this incident. Please see the attached photographs of the suspect involved in this matter. The suspect’s identity is currently unknown.

Structure Fire

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Monday, September 5, 2022, at approximately 5:15 a.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to reports of a fire in an abandoned home in the 200 block of Cooley Street.

Officers arrived at the home and observed both smoke and flames coming from the structure.  The fire was brought under control in about fifteen minutes.

During fire suppression activities a firefighter suffered a minor laceration to their hand. This officer was treated, and has been released from a local hospital. No other injuries were reported as a result of this occurrence.

The Fire Marshal responded to investigate the cause of this fire.  The investigation is currently ongoing.

Shooting Investigation 1100 Lake Street

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Sunday, August 28, 2022, at approximately 2:00 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to reports of an individual struck by gunfire in the 1100 block of Lake Street.

Officers arrived in the area and located two individuals who were suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.  The victims, a 30-year-old Kalamazoo resident, and a 19-year-old Kalamazoo resident were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.  The victim’s injuries are considered serious but non-life-threatening.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.

  Shooting Investigation 800 Nola Street

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at approximately 8:00 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to reports of gunfire in the 800 block of Nola Street.

Officers responded to investigate the calls.  While doing so, a 16-year-old male arrived at a local hospital via private vehicle, with an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The victim is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in critical condition.
