Kalamazoo neighborhoods to host National Night Out events Tuesday, August 3

Kalamazoo, Mich. – On Tuesday, August 3, 2021, citizens throughout Kalamazoo are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for National Night Out. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

This year celebrates the 38th Annual National Night Out event. On this occasion, residents in neighborhoods throughout Kalamazoo and across the nation are asked to promote police-community partnerships; crime, drug, and violence prevention; safety and neighborhood unity.

Many neighborhoods in our community will be hosting a variety of special events – such as block parties, cookouts, and youth activities – to commemorate the occasion.

Please find a list of known National Night Out events below:

Armed Home Invasion Arrest

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Friday, July 23, 2021 at approximately 11:30 a.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to reports of a man with a gun who was forcing entry into a residence in the 1300 block of Fox Ridge Drive.

Officers arrived in the area and attempted to contact an individual who matched the description provided by a witness.  The subject fled from officers on foot; however, was soon after caught and arrested.  The firearm used during this incident was recovered during this investigation.

The suspect was arrested regarding charges of armed home invasion, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing a police officer, and assault.  The suspect was also arrested for violating release conditions established from previous criminal activity where he was released on bond.

Fortunately, no one was injured as a result of this incident.

Shooting Investigation 1400 Fox Ridge Drive

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Sunday, June 27, 2021 at approximately 5:00 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to reports of gunfire in the 1400 block of Fox Ridge Drive.

Officers arrived in the area and located a 21-year-old victim inside a home who was suffering from an apparent gunshot injury.  Officers provided medical treatment to the victim who was transported to a local hospital. 

The victim’s injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

KDPS investigates Florence Street shooting, seeks assistance locating suspect vehicle

Kalamazoo, Mich. – The Kalamazoo Department of Public safety is seeking the assistance of the public with locating and identifying one of the suspects involved in the Florence Street shooting.

Attached is a picture of the suspect vehicle – identified as a white Chevy Camaro – involved in the shooting.   

There is currently no status update available on the shooting victim.

Shooting details

On Friday, June 4, 2021, at approximately 6:58 P.M, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 700 block of Florence St for a report of a shooting.  Upon officer’s arrival, they did not locate a shooting victim and began to investigate. 

While officers were on scene, a shooting victim arrived at a local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound from this incident.  The victim, a 14-year-old Kalamazoo resident, was treated at the hospital and is listed in stable condition.  It appears the victim was hit by a stray bullet while sitting on a porch holding an infant.  No suspects have been identified.

Fatal Shooting Investigation

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Sunday, April 11, 2021 at approximately 3:30 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the report of a subject who had been struck by gunfire inside of a residence in the 1000 block of North Park Street.

Officers arrived at the residence and located a victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.  Officers provided medical treatment and transferred care to EMS personnel.  The victim was transported to a local hospital where they later died as a result of their injuries.

The victim in this incident is not being identified at this time, pending family notifications.

Kalamazoo Public Safety offers its condolences to any family or friends who have been impacted by this tragic event.
