Arrests Made in Burglary Investigation

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Saturday, November 19, 2022, at approximately 2:00 a.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to reports of a breaking and entering at a business in the 2100 block of South Burdick.

Responding officers flooded the area as a K-9 track was conducted.  The K-9 led directly to a residence in the immediate area of the business.  Officers converged on the home and attempted contact.  Several occupants could be seen attempting to hide and turn off lights during this contact.

Officers secured the home from the exterior and applied for a search warrant.  Officers gave approximately three hours of loudspeaker announcements for the occupants to exit the home, these directions were not followed by the occupants. Upon issuance of the warrant officers made entry into the home.

Inside the home, four suspects were contacted, identified, and apprehended or arrested.  One of the suspects was located hiding in the attic of the home.  Evidence related to this incident was also recovered which included, clothing worn by the suspects, tools used to force entry to the business, and property that was stolen from the business.

Two individuals identified as suspects were arrested and lodged at the Kalamazoo Country Jail where they await arraignment on charges of breaking and entering. 

Two additional juvenile suspects were apprehended and turned over to their guardians.  Charges will be submitted to the Kalamazoo Country Prosecutor’s Office for their review.

Arrest Made in Armed Robbery

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Monday, November 14, 2022, at approximately 8:40 a.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to multiple reports of a stabbing that was occurring in the 100 block of East North Street.

Officers arrived in the area and were able to quickly locate the involved parties due to multiple, accurate witness reports of the event.

After investigation, it was determined that an altercation occurred involving money and one of the subjects produced a knife and stabbed the other multiple times.  This was not a random act as the two subjects are acquainted with each other.

The victim, a 52-year-old Kalamazoo resident was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.  The injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety would like to thank the involved citizens who witnessed this event. Their quick and accurate reporting caused for an immediate response and apprehension of the suspect.

Fatal Shooting Investigation Update

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Friday, November 11, 2022, at approximately 3:00 a.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the report of a subject who was struck by gunfire.  The subject arrived at a local hospital in a private vehicle.

Officers began investigating this incident and interviewing witnesses.  Officers soon discovered a crime scene near the 2600 block of West Michigan Avenue.

The victim, a 21-year-old Kalamazoo resident died at the hospital as a result of their injuries.  The victim is not being identified at this time.

Kalamazoo Public Safety offers its condolences to any family or friends who have been impacted by this tragic event.

***UPDATE*** 

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Detectives began investigating this shooting immediately and were able to identify the suspect, a Lansing, MI resident. The Lansing Police Department assisted with the investigation, which led to the arrest of the suspect several hours later in Lansing. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and is currently being held at the Ingham County Jail on an unrelated warrant.  

This case is expected to be sent to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutors’ Office tomorrow, November 15, for review.   

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety would like to thank the Lansing Police Department for their assistance. Their timely and professional response to our request resulted in the safe capture of the suspect.

Shooting Investigation 700 Staples Avenue

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at approximately 6:00 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to reports of gunfire in the 700 block of Staples Avenue.

Officers arrived in the area and located two separate vehicle accidents.  Witnesses in the area reported hearing gunshots and seeing vehicles driving recklessly in the area.  While investigating, a 49-year-old Kalamazoo resident arrived at a local hospital via personal transportation with an apparent gunshot wound to the leg.  The victim’s injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Garage Fire

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Saturday, October 22, 2022, at approximately 2:30 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to reports of a fire in the 1200 block of East Vine Street.

Officers arrived and located a detached garage on a property that was engulfed by smoke and flames.  Officers were able to extinguish the fire quickly, limiting the damage to just the garage and contents.

There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident.

The City of Kalamazoo Fire Marshal was called to the fire scene to investigate the cause of this fire.
