Response Leads to Arrest of Armed Assailant

On Thursday June 25, 2020 at approximately 11:00 pm, Officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the 2500 block of Saint Albans Way for the report of an assault involving a firearm.

Officers arrived in the area and located a victim.  The victim reported that they had been battered and had a gun pointed at their head by a known assailant.  Officers patrolling the area located the suspect who immediately fled on foot.  Officers gave chase and apprehended the suspect after a brief foot pursuit.

The Officers searched the area where the suspect had been and located the loaded firearm that was used during the assault.  The firearm seized is pictured below.

The suspect, a 25-year-old Kalamazoo resident was arrested and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail, where they await arraignment on multiple charges.

Arrest Made in Drive by Shooting

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Thursday, June 25, 2020 at approximately 6:10 PM, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 800 block of Woodward Avenue in reference to reports of gunshots.

Officers arrived in the area and contacted a victim who reported an argument with a known acquaintance.  It was reported that the suspect involved in the argument left the area and returned a short time later firing several rounds at the victim’s house.

Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers, with the assistance of Portage Public Safety located the vehicle used in the shooting in the 7100 block of Provence Drive.  This discovery led to the contact and arrest of a 23-year-old Portage resident.

The suspect was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail and is awaiting arraignment regarding this incident.

Shooting Investigation

On Wednesday June 24, 2020 at approximately 9:00 pm, Officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the report of gunshots in the 1200 block of Ogden Avenue.  Officers arrived in the area and located two victims who were struck by gunfire.

Witnesses reported to responding Officers that the shots being fired were the result of two automobiles driving in the area engaging in a “rolling gun battle”.

Gunfire exchanged during this incident struck two children, a five-year-old and a twelve-year-old.  These children were not involved and were merely playing on a nearby sidewalk.

Responding Officers rendered medical aid to the victims.  One of the children was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The second child did not require hospitalization.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is continuing to investigate this incident.

Traffic Enforcement Leads to Firearm Recovery

On Wednesday June 24, 2020 at approximately 7:30pm, Officers were conducting traffic enforcement in the 900 Block of W North due to community complaints of speeding automobiles.

An Officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop in this area for a traffic violation when the operator ran from the vehicle on foot.  The Officer gave chase and was able to apprehend the operator in the 1000 block of Nola Street.

While fleeing from the vehicle the operator discarded a handgun which was recovered by investigating Officers.

The suspect, a 21-year-old Kalamazoo resident was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.  The suspect awaits arraignment on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest.

Shots Fired Investigation Leads to Firearm Recovery

On Wednesday June 24, 2020 at approximately 6:30 pm, Officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the report of a single gunshot in the 1300 block of Royce Avenue.

Officers arrived and contacted a juvenile who was walking in the area.  During this contact Officers discovered that the juvenile was in possession of a firearm.  The firearm was seized, and the juvenile was released to a guardian.

This matter is being forwarded to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutors Office for their review and charging decision.
