UPDATE: No Contact Advisory for Portage Creek Lifted.

APRIL 13, 2022

On 4/3/2022 at approximately 11:00am, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to a two-vehicle crash at Portage and Alcott St.  PSO’s arrived to find a motorcycle had struck a semi-truck.  During the crash, the motorcycle struck the fuel tank on the semi-truck which caused approximately 40 gallons of diesel fuel to leak onto the street.  A portion of the fuel leaked into the storm drain before Public Safety and Public Works personnel arrived to stop the leak.  After this event a no contact order was announced for the Portage Creek in impacted areas.

In coordination with Kalamazoo Public Services, EGLE, and the Kalamazoo County Heath Department the no contact advisory for the Portage Creek as been lifted.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety extends its thanks to all contributing departments and agencies.

Shooting Investigation 900 Trimble Avenue

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Thursday, December 30, 2021 at approximately 10:30 a.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to reports of an individual struck by gunfire in the 900 block of Trimble Avenue.

Officers arrived in the area and located a victim who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.  The victim, a 32-year-old Kalamazoo resident was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.  The victim’s injuries are considered non-life threatening.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.

KDPS investigates sexual assault, armed robbery and seeks assistance locating suspects

Kalamazoo, Mich. – In the early hours of Sunday, October 3, officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to reports of an armed home invasion at an apartment complex on Michigamme Woods Drive.

Upon arriving at the residence, officers learned that the suspects – 3 armed men – had also sexually assaulted the resident.

The suspects then stole the victim’s vehicle, which led to a short vehicular pursuit that ended in the area of KL and 11th Street.

The suspects left the vehicle and fled on foot into the wooded area near the Paddock Apartments on Copper Beech Blvd. KDPS officers were unable to locate the suspects.

We are working diligently to gather all relevant information so that justice can be served.

The Criminal Investigations Division of KDPS is actively investigating this situation; however, there are no named suspects currently.

Traffic Stop Results in the Seizure of Stolen Handguns

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Tuesday September 28th, at approximately 10:00 a.m. officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety conducted a directed patrol in the 1000 block of West Paterson Street in response to citizen complaints of drug loitering, fighting, and gun violence.

During this patrol a traffic stop was initiated by officers.  While contacting the occupants one of them could be seen attempting to conceal a handgun with an extended magazine.  This occupant, a 21-year-old male from Kalamazoo was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon.  Officers searched the vehicle after a police K-9 was called to assist. During this search an additional stolen handgun and controlled substances were located.  A second occupant, a 26-year-old male from Kalamazoo was arrested regarding the newly discovered firearm and narcotics. 

The two suspects above have been lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail and await arraignment on several weapons and drug charges. A third occupant of the vehicle, a 31-year-old male from Kalamazoo was found to have warrants for his arrest and was also lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail where he awaits extradition to Wisconsin.

Arrests Made During Broad-Daylight Firearm Exhibition

Kalamazoo, Michigan: 

On Saturday, September 18, 2021 officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety conducted a directed patrol in the 400 Block of West Frank Street in response to citizen complaints of drug loitering, fighting, and gun violence.

While monitoring the area covertly, officers observed several subjects showing each other extended firearm magazines, as well as other suspicious behavior centered around a parked vehicle.  Officers approached and contacted these individuals.  During this contact firearms could be seen inside the passenger compartment of the parked vehicle.  Officers searched the vehicle and located controlled substances, digital scales, and several magazines filled with ammunition.  Several of the magazines recovered were high capacity and one of them contained armor piercing ammunition.

Two suspects were contacted and identified as 19- and 23-year-old Kalamazoo residents.  They were arrested and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail where they await arraignment on weapons offenses.
