Public Safety Officer Intercepts Drive-by Shooting Suspect

Kalamazoo, Michigan:

On Thursday, December 31, 2020 at approximately 1:00 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the report of gunfire in the 1900 block of South Burdick Street.  Witnesses reported a detailed description of a vehicle and the suspect involved as officers were converging on the area.

A public safety officer responding to the call intercepted the described vehicle.  When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the operator fled. The vehicle was soon after abandoned by the suspect as they fled on foot.  Public safety officers gave chase, and the suspect was arrested after a brief foot pursuit.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

The suspect involved was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail regarding multiple felony charges including weapons offenses, fleeing eluding and resisting arrest.

Gunfire Strikes Occupied Vehicle

Kalamazoo, Michigan:

On Friday, December 18, 2020 at approximately 1:45 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to multiple reports of gunfire in the 1300 block of Fox Ridge Drive.  Detailed descriptions were given of involved people and vehicles by witnesses in the area.

Officers responding intercepted an involved vehicle that had been struck by gunfire.  The vehicle was stopped.  The occupant was discovered to be hastily leaving the area after their vehicle was struck by gunfire.  The operator also had with them a four-month-old child.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported during this event.

Traffic Stop Leads to Firearm Recovery

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Thursday, December 18th, 2020 an Officer with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 4100 Block of W Michigan Ave.  During the investigation, Officers suspected narcotic activity and requested the assistance of a K9 for a “free air” search.  The K9 alerted on the vehicle and a subsequent search of the vehicle revealed narcotics and an unregistered pistol. 

The suspect, identified as a 17-year-old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested for the weapons offense and was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Armed Car Jacking Investigation

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Thursday, December 3, 2020 at approximately 8:00 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 500 block of Harding Place in reference to the report of a subject who was robbed of their property and vehicle at gun point.

Public safety officers arrived in the area to investigate.  The victim reported to officers that they had made arrangements on social media to meet up with an unknown person to purchase a gaming device that was advertised for sale. 

When the victim arrived in the suggested meeting area they were approached by several people, one of which had a handgun pointed at them.  The suspects then demanded money and possession of the victim’s vehicle.

The suspects involved fled the area in the victim’s vehicle and have not been located. No suspect information is available currently.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety would like to remind those utilizing social media such as Facebook, Let it Go, Craigslist, Snap Chat and the like to exercise caution when considering to give out personal information, arranging to meet unknown individuals, or exchange money for goods and services.

Pursuit and Arrest of Suspects in Drive-by Shooting

Kalamazoo, Michigan:

On Saturday, November 28, 2020 at approximately 8:00 p.m., Officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were dispatched to reports of gunfire in the 500 block of Walnut Court.  Witnesses reported a detailed description of a vehicle involved as officers converged on the area.

Officers arrived and intercepted the described vehicle.  When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the operator refused. The vehicle was then pursued by public safety officers.  The pursuit came to an end when the occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot in the 1600 block of North Church Street.  Both occupants were quickly located and arrested.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

The suspects involved were lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail regarding multiple felony charges including weapons offenses, fleeing eluding and resisting arrest.
