Residential Fire on Myers Street

Kalamazoo, MI: On Sunday April 22, 2018, at approximately 9:15 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were dispatched to the 800-block of Myers St. for a report of a house on fire with smoke and fire showing.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found smoke and fire coming from the north side of the structure. A resident who appeared to be having difficulty breathing was located outside the residence. Firefighters were able to confirm that no other occupants were inside. The fire was brought under control in less than an hour. The resident was treated by paramedics and released at the scene.

The fire was investigated by the Fire Marshal’s Office, and a suspect was subsequently arrested for arson of a dwelling.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety strongly urges everyone to have a working fire extinguisher in your home as well as having working smoke detectors on each level of your home.

Gull Road Bank Robbery

Kalamazoo, MI: On Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at approximately 4:40 p.m., Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officers responded to a bank in the 3300-block of Gull Road for a report of a robbery. Upon arrival, officers determined that a lone suspect had stolen an undisclosed amount of money and fled the bank on foot. No injuries were reported. The suspect has not been identified at this time, but the Criminal Investigation Division is continuing to investigate this incident.

The suspect is described as follows:

A male wearing a dark-colored mask, a grey hooded Nike sweatshirt with a neon green Nike swoosh, dark-colored pants, black Nike shoes with a white Nike swoosh, and carrying a black sling-style backpack.

Shooting

Kalamazoo, MI: On Friday, March 16, 2018, at approximately 2:04 a.m., Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officers responded to the 700-block of Howard St. for reports of shots fired.  Upon arrival, officers did not locate any victims, but did find evidence that a firearm had been discharged in the area.  A short time later, a victim arrived at Bronson Hospital by private vehicle with a gunshot wound.  The 33-year-old male victim could not provide any information about who had shot him.  He is currently listed in serious condition.

At this time there is no suspect information, but the investigation is ongoing.

Armed Robbery

Kalamazoo, MI: On February 19, 2018 at approximately 9:55 p.m. Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officers responded to a business in the 3700-block of Mt. Olivet Rd. for a report of an armed robbery.

Two suspects entered the business; one of the suspects brandishing a dark-color handgun. The suspects jumped the counter and forced the clerk to the floor. They stole money and cigarettes and then exited the business. A police K9 conducted a track of the suspects, but they were not located.

The suspects were captured on surveillance camera footage and described as follows:

The first suspect was a black male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and white gloves.

The second suspect was a black male wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and black gloves.

Both had their faces covered with bandanas.
