Felonious Assault

Kalamazoo, MI: On Saturday April 18, 2020, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 2100-block of Portage St. in reference to a report of a male threatening a family member with a firearm. Officers located the suspect on scene and arrested him without incident. A search warrant was conducted at the residence with the assistance of Kalamazoo Metro SWAT Team. Officers located multiple firearms inside the home. No one was injured during this incident.

As a result of the investigation a 47-year-old Kalamazoo resident was arrested and charged with felonious assault.

Portage St. from E. Alcott St. to Miller Rd. was closed briefly during this incident but has since been reopened.

W Main St / Hilbert St Rollover

Kalamazoo, MI: At 6:52 p.m. on April 6, 2020, Public Safety officers were dispatched to the area of W Main St and Hilbert St on a report of a single-vehicle rollover crash. Upon arrival, officers located a vehicle on its side, with the lone occupant trapped inside. Utilizing extrication tools, officers safely rescued the driver. The driver was transported to Bronson by Life EMS with minor injuries.

After investigation, it was determined that the vehicle had been traveling west on W Main St, when it left the roadway at a curve, struck a utility pole, and rolled over. W Main St was closed for approximately 50 minutes while this incident was investigated.

Kalamazoo Public Safety wishes to remind drivers that your first duty as a driver is to drive your vehicle. Remember to keep your eyes on the road ahead, and minimize distractions in the passenger cabin.

Home Invasion Suspect Caught

Kalamazoo, MI:
On April 6th 2020, Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to the 400-block of Whitcomb for the report of a home invasion. The reporting party called saying they observed someone breaking into their neighbor’s house. The first arriving officers saw the suspect inside and were able to confine the suspect to a rear bathroom where they barricaded themselves. Contact was made with the resident to confirm that no one should be at the home. Officers were able to safely make entry, locate, and arrest the suspect, a 23-year-old Kalamazoo resident.

Public Safety extends its gratitude to the diligent neighbors who reported the initial crime that resulted in the arrest.

Robbery

Kalamazoo, MI: On Friday, March 6, 2020, at 2:29 a.m. officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to a report of a robbery in the 2700-block of Redwood Ave. The suspect approached the victim from behind, and demanded property from him, while implying that he had a weapon. The suspect took the stolen property, got into a vehicle, and left the scene. Officers canvassed the area, but the suspect was not located. No one was injured during this incident.

The suspect was described as a tall white male with light brown or blonde hair. He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt or coat, a blue baseball cap, and blue jeans at the time of the robbery. The victim could not provide an estimated age for the suspect or a description of the suspect vehicle.

Shooting Investigation

Kalamazoo, MI: On Saturday, February 29, 2020, at approximately 9:00 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were made aware of a gunshot victim that had just arrived at Bronson Hospital by private vehicle. The victim stated he had been shot in the 1400-block of Portage St. Several officers responded to that area to locate the scene of the crime, to identify potential witnesses and to recover any evidence. The victim, a 19-year-old male Kalamazoo resident, was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries.

During the investigation, limited suspect information was provided. After the shooting, the unidentified suspect was observed fleeing the scene in a white mid-size SUV. The vehicle was last observed north on Portage Rd.
