Shooting Investigation

Kalamazoo, MI: On Friday, 23, 2020, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 1000-block of Hays Park Ave. in reference to a subject that had been shot. When officers arrived, a 44-year-old victim was located with a non-life-threatening grazing gunshot wound to her side. The suspect fled prior to police arrival.

The victim provided suspect information to include a vehicle description. This information was relayed to neighboring jurisdictions. Portage Public Safety located the vehicle moments later and detained the driver and occupants. The vehicle passenger was determined to be the suspect and when the vehicle was searched a firearm was recovered.

The suspect a 42-year-old, Kalamazoo resident, was arrested for felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon, felony firearm and outstanding warrants.

Traffic Stop Leads to Seizure of Drugs and Firearm

Kalamazoo, MI: On May 22, 2020, at approximately 8:40 pm, Kalamazoo Public Safety officers conducted a traffic stop in the 5300-block of Portage St. for a civil infraction. Upon contacting the vehicle occupants, an odor of marijuana was detected, and the occupants appeared unusually nervous. When the occupants were asked to exit the vehicle, a passenger informed officers he had a firearm. The firearm was recovered, and the vehicle was searched. In addition to the loaded firearm, over two hundred ecstasy pills were seized.

As a result of this investigation, a 26-year-old Kalamazoo resident was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, felony firearm, and possession with intent to deliver ecstasy.

Fatal Structure Fire

Kalamazoo, MI: On Saturday, May 16, 2020, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to a residential structure fire in the 900-block of Essex Circle. Upon arrival, they encountered smoke and flames coming from the home. Officers learned the resident might still be inside and immediately initiated search-and-rescue operations despite the growing fire conditions.

The 79-year-old female resident was located deceased inside the home. The identity of the victim has not been released at this time. The incident is currently under investigation by the Kalamazoo Fire Marshal.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety offers its condolences to any family and friends who have been impacted by this loss.

Motorcycle Crash

Kalamazoo, MI: On Friday, April 24, 2020, at approximately 9:38 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the intersection of Whites Road and Parkview Ave for the report of a motorcycle crash. Upon arrival, officers were advised by a witness to the crash that the male rider had struck a curb causing him to lose control and be thrown off the motorcycle. The 22-year-old male was treated by LIFE EMS and transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Currently, the crash is still under investigation.

Commercial Fire

Kalamazoo, MI: On Monday, April 20, 2020, at approximately 11:06 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety received a report of smoke coming from the commercial building at 773 W. Michigan Ave. First arriving officers observed heavy smoke coming from the roof of the structure and began fire suppression operations. The fire was extinguished, and the Fire Marshal responded to the scene. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Currently, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
