Shooting

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Sunday, June 12th, 2022, at approximately 12:52 P.M., officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the 1000 block of Interfaith Blvd. for a report of shots fired.  When officers arrived on scene, they located one male suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg.  The victim was provided medical care and transported to a local hospital where he remains in stable condition.

Kalamazoo Public Safety is diligently investigating this incident and remains committed to effectively addressing gun violence in our community.

Structure Fire

On Saturday, April 23, 2022, at approximately 09:18 A.M., officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the 700 block of Riverview Dr. for a report of a structure fire. When KDPS officers arrived, smoke was observed coming from the rear of the residence. 

KDPS officers were able to bring the fire under control within 15 minutes and are currently still on scene.  The structure was unoccupied, and no injuries occurred during this incident. 

The cause of the fire is not yet known and is under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s office.

Kalamazoo Public Safety would like to remind everyone to talk with family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.

Dump Truck Roll-Over/Road Closure

On April 1, 2022, at approximately 1:19pm, Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the area of Sprinkle Road and Cork Street, reference to a dump truck roll over. When officers arrived on scene, a dump truck had turned over spilling a load of concrete in the roadway.  Officers are on scene investigating this incident and assisting with traffic control.  Sprinkle Road is currently down to one lane of southbound travel.  Please avoid the area while crews are cleaning up the scene. 

The driver received minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.   It does not appear that alcohol was a factor.

CRT/KVET Arrest Violent Offenders with Guns and Drugs

Kalamazoo, MI: 

On March 29, 2022, at approximately 6:30 pm, Kalamazoo Public Safety’s Crime Reduction Team (CRT) and the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team (KVET) conducted a surveillance operation as a part of our continued efforts to reduce gun violence. 

Surveillance was conducted on a vehicle that was occupied by several known area group members in the parking lot of a party store located in the 700 block of N Westnedge Avenue.  When investigators approached the vehicle, the driver attempted to flee. Investigators were able to detain the three occupants of the vehicle.  They were found to be in possession of a handgun with an extended magazine, a high-capacity assault pistol and various drugs. 

A 21-year-old male, as well as the two other Kalamazoo area residents (18 and 19 years old), were arrested on various weapons, drug violations, driving offenses and outstanding warrants.

UPDATE MISSING FOUND: 63 Year Old Male with Dementia Missing & Endangered

63 Year Old Male with Dementia Missing & Endangered

On March 28, 2022, at approximately 8:00 a.m. Officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety located Curtis Ray. Curtis Ray was unharmed and returned home.

On March 28, 2022, at approximately 3:53 a.m. the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) was dispatched to a missing male in the 600 Block of Ada St. 

Curtis Edward Ray, 63 years old, has Dementia and walked away from his family home.  Curtis Ray was last seen wearing a blue hoodie, black jogger style pants and black boots.  He left the residence sometime between 11:00 p.m. and 3:45 a.m., he is believed to have been walking towards the downtown area.  KDPS is asking if anyone sees Curtis Ray to please call.  

****On March 28, 2022, at approximately 8:00 a.m. Officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety located Curtis Ray. Ray was unharmed and returned home. ****
