PRESS RELEASE

Stolen Vehicle Recovered with Multiple Firearms

Kalamazoo, MI:

On March 14th 2023, around 11PM a Kalamazoo resident observed their stolen vehicle in the 1800 block of Winton St. in the city of Kalamazoo.  The vehicle was on the move and Kalamazoo Public Safety located it in the 1600 block of E Cork St and observed subjects walking away from the car.  Multiple officers gave chase to the 3 subjects and captured 2 immediately.  A third was located a short time later with the assistance of a police K9.  During the foot pursuits, officers observed the suspects throwing items and upon searching the immediate area located 3 loaded handguns.

The three suspects were arrested on several felony charges including: UDAA; Resisting and Obstructing; and various firearm charges.  Two of the suspects were lodged at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home and the third at the Kalamazoo County Jail awaiting arraignment.

Vehicle Accident Strikes Residential Structure

Kalamazoo, MI:

On January 19th 2023 around 7:30PM, Kalamazoo Public Safety was dispatched to an accident in the 300 block of W Hopkins St.  Officers located two vehicles that had incurred serious damage and struck a residence after leaving the roadway during the accident.  The front porch of the house was destroyed and the drivers of both vehicles suffered significant but non-life-threatening injuries.  Park St was reduced to one lane during the investigation but has been reopened to full usage. 

Alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the accident at this time.

PRESS RELEASE

Felonious Assault

Kalamazoo, MI:

On January 17th 2023 around 11:30PM officers responded to the 1000 block of Interfaith Blvd for the report of a female subject shooting at people.  On scene officers located an apartment that had an apparent gun shot into the front door.  Public Safety cordoned off the suspect’s apartment to protect the public and made P.A. announcements requesting a peaceful surrender.  After being on scene for 20 minutes, a 22-year-old Kalamazoo resident exited the apartment and was taken into custody facing charges of felonious assault and weapons offenses.  Thankfully no injuries were reported from the incident.

PRESS RELEASE

Narcotics Arrest

Kalamazoo, MI:

On January 12th, 2023 a Kalamazoo Public Safety Sergeant observed narcotics activities occurring in the 900 block of north Westnedge Ave.  In the process of detaining the individuals, the suspects fought with the Sergeant and arriving officers.  A quick response from offices enabled KDPS to take the suspects into custody without further incident and seize illegal drugs.  This response did briefly shut down Westnedge Ave with several patrol vehicles however, the roadway is open for normal travel at this time.

Three Kalamazoo residents were arrested on narcotics charges and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

PRESS RELEASE

KDPS K9 Benno locates Armed Robbery suspect after K9 track

Kalamazoo, MI: On Monday, January 2, 2023, officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) responded to reports of an armed robbery that occurred in the 1600 block of N. Westnedge Ave.  During the robbery, what appeared to be a black handgun was pointed at the business owner before the suspect fled on foot.  A 19-year-old Kalamazoo resident was found hiding several blocks away by KDPS K9 Benno and arrested.  A firearm was also located with the suspect who was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail facing several felony charges.
