Traffic Stop Leads to Recovery of Stolen Firearm

Kalamazoo, MI:
On 02-04-2021 around 830 pm, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officers conducted a traffic stop in the 100 block of E. Stockbridge Ave. KDPS Officers were addressing gun related crime originating from this residential district. The vehicle occupants were contacted and during the investigation a semi-automatic firearm was observed inside of the vehicle. The firearm was recovered and subsequently determined to be stolen.
As a result, a 36-year-old Kalamazoo resident was arrested and charged with several felonies. He was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Fatal Car Accident

Kalamazoo, MI:
On January 31st, 2021 at approximately 00:15 AM, Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to the area of Kilgore Rd and the Kilgore Service Rd for the report of a traffic accident. Officers located a head-on collision near the intersection that had obvious significant damage to both vehicles.
One of the vehicle’s passengers was found in full cardiac arrest upon arrival and officers immediately started life saving measures. The occupant was transported to a local hospital where they were unfortunately pronounced deceased.
The drivers of both vehicles were also transported to local hospitals for non-threatening injuries. Alcohol is believed to be a factor; however, the investigation is on-going. Kilgore Rd is was shut down for thru traffic for several hours but is currently back open for normal traffic use.
The name of the deceased is also currently being withheld pending notification to the next of kin.

Fatal Fire Investigation

On Saturday, January 30, 2021 at approximately 0119 am, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety was dispatched to the 1400 block of S. Westnedge regarding a structure fire.
First arriving officers reported fire on the second floor of the building. Additionally, it was learned that the residence was occupied by at least one person. A search and rescue team as well as an interior attack team were sent into the building. Moments later, the search and rescue team located the resident in the room with heavy smoke and fire.
The victim was immediately removed from the residence, however sadly, did not survive.
The fire started on the second floor and made it to the attic area of the home. The fire was brought under control in approximately 45 minutes.
The victim’s name is being withheld at this time until next of kin can be notified.

Fire at Encampment

At approximately 12:59 a.m. on January 30, 2021, a KDPS Officer was near Blaine St. and O Neil St. investigating a criminal complaint when he observed a large fire. The fire appeared to be out of control and near multiple tents. The Officer requested a full fire response. KCCDA also received calls advising that there was an out of control fire at the encampment. The Officer rushed to contact the residents and evacuate the tents. During this time there was one probable propane tank explosion.
Within one-minute, Fire apparatuses and additional Officers arrived on scene to assist with the evacuation of residents. The fire was brought under control within ten minutes. One person reported minor injuries and they were treated and released by a local ambulance service.
The cause of the fire is not yet known and is under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s office.

Shooting Investigation

Shooting Investigation
At approximately 2:20 a.m. on December 16, 2020, KDPS Officers heard approximately 8 gunshots while on patrol near the 700 block of N. Pitcher. Citizens contacted dispatch reporting having heard gunshots. A description of an involved vehicle was provided and responding officers located the vehicle as it was leaving the scene. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop however the vehicle fled. The suspect vehicle was found unoccupied near the 1500 block of Woodward Ave. The suspects have not been identified at this time.
Officers responded to the 700 block of N. Pitcher and located evidence of the shooting. While on scene, a 26-year-old Kalamazoo resident arrived at a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
