Shooting Investigation

Kalamazoo, MI: On Friday, August 24, 2019 at approximately 1142 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to N. Westnedge Ave/ Florence in reference to a verbal argument. Once officers arrived, witnesses reported several gunshots in the area. During the course of this investigation 2 gunshot victims were located nearby. A third victim was transported by citizen to a local hospital for treatment. One victim is a 21 year old male, Kalamazoo resident. The second victim is a 39 year old female, Kalamazoo resident. The third victim is a 40 year old male, Kalamazoo resident. All three victims are in stable condition.


All involved victims and several witnesses were interviewed however limited suspect information was provided. The suspect was described as a tall and skinny black male. After the shooting the suspect was observed fleeing the scene in a dark colored older sedan. The vehicle was last observed east on Florence.

Armed Robbery 900 W Lovell St

Kalamazoo, MI: On Monday October 1st, 2018 at 1:38 a.m., Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the Circle K gas station located in the 900 block of W Lovell St for an armed robbery that had just occurred. A black male wearing a dark colored long sleeve hooded sweatshirt, with a green coat or vest over the sweatshirt, and cargo pants entered the store and pointed a handgun at the clerk and instructed the clerk to lie on the ground. The suspect fled the scene with cash and cigarettes. KDPS, along with assistance from the Michigan State Police, Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office and Western Michigan University Police checked the area and conducted a police K-9 track, but the suspect was not located.

Clown Threat Suspect Arrested

Kalamazoo, MI:  On October 6th, 2016, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety received information from concerned citizens about a Social Media threat of violence to our local High Schools. Public Safety worked throughout the night to uncover the person(s) responsible for the threat.

This morning at 6:00 a.m., our investigations led us to make an arrest of a 17 year-old Loy Norrix student responsible for making the Social Media threat. Based on the information, it is believed the suspect acted alone.

Man Shot in the 1100 Block of Mason Street

Kalamazoo, MI: On Sunday, May 22nd, 2016, at approximately 3:35 a.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the area of Douglas Avenue and Mason Street to a report of several gunshots being fired. Shortly after being dispatched to the call, a 23 year-old male arrived at Borgess Hospital by private vehicle with a gunshot wound to the face and leg. The victim is in stable condition at this time. Public Safety officers and detectives continue to investigate what events led up to the shooting.

Resident Escapes House Fire with Minor Burns

Kalamazoo, MI: On Saturday, May 21st, 2016, at approximately 6:38 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to a report of a fire in the 1800 block of S. Burdick Street. Upon arrival, officers encountered a two story home divided into several smaller apartments with heavy smoke and fire conditions on the second floor. A 46 year old resident, who was sleeping at the time, awoke to the fire and managed to escape with minor injuries. Public Safety officers started an initial interior attack on the fire however were call out due to the collapse of the roof. Public Safety officers were able to extinguish the majority of the fire within 40 minutes of arriving on scene.

Six residents were displaced and provided housing assistance by the Red Cross. The injured resident was transported to Bronson Hospital for treatment of the burns and smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Kalamazoo Fire Marshal’s office.
