KDPS responds to shots fired incident
Kalamazoo, MI:
On February 3rd, 2022, at approximately 12:51 p.m., Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded to the area of 1000 King Highway after receiving a report of shots fired. Witnesses reported that man riding in a vehicle fired a gun several times at another man walking on foot. The intended victim fled the area, and was not located by responding officers. It is not believed that the intended victim was injured. Officers on scene discovered that a nearby business and an unoccupied vehicle were both struck by gunfire. Evidence related to the shooting was collected by the officers.
The suspect vehicle was described as a dark gray sedan. It was last seen heading east on King Highway.

Public Safety responds to structure fire
Kalamazoo, MI:
On January 30th, 2022 at approximately 3:43 p.m., Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded to the 300 block of E Michigan Avenue for a report of a structure fire inside a large building used for both commercial and residential purposes. The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes of arrival. Fire crews remained on scene for more than an hour conducting cleanup operations and assessing the damage. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Shots fired into occupied homes
Kalamazoo, MI:
On January 30th, 2022 at approximately 12:10 p.m., Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded to the 1000 block of Interfaith Blvd for a report of shots fired. First arriving officers spoke with a woman who reported that somebody had fired a gunshot into her apartment. Although the apartment was occupied at the time, nobody was injured. Public Safety officers also located bullet holes in a neighboring apartment and forced entry to check on the residents. Nobody was located inside this apartment. Public Safety officers later contacted the residents of the second apartment, who said they had been inside the apartment when it was struck by the gunfire and had fled the home.
As of this time, the suspect has not been identified or located.

Pedestrian Struck by Motorist
Kalamazoo, MI
On Friday, January 28, 2022, at approximately 6:31 PM, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 4200 block of S. Burdick St. for the report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. A 38-year-old Kalamazoo resident was located with significant injuries. He was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the vehicle left the scene of the accident and has not yet been identified.

INVESTIGATION LEADS TO MULTIPLE FIREARMS AND DRUGS SEIZED – MULTIPLE ARRESTS MADE

INVESTIGATION LEADS TO MULTIPLE FIREARMS AND DRUGS SEIZED – MULTIPLE ARRESTS MADE
Kalamazoo, Mich. – On December 1st, 2021, Investigators assigned to the Department of Public Safety’s Crime Reduction Team (CRT) and Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team (KVET) conducted an investigation in the 200 block of Whitcomb St. The operation involved contacting two vehicles known to be associated with the address. Upon contacting the two vehicles, a total of four loaded pistols (two of which were stolen), illegal narcotics and evidence of the sale of those narcotics were seized. A subsequent search warrant was executed at the home.
As a result of these contacts, eight (8) Kalamazoo area residents – ranging from 15 to 33 years of age – were arrested. All were arrested on felony weapons, drug offenses and/or warrants and they were all lodged, accordingly, at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home or Kalamazoo County Jail.
The following arrests were made:
• A 15-year-old male was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a stolen firearm and possession with the intent to distribute crack cocaine
• A 15-year-old male was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and possession with the intent to distribute marijuana
• A 16-year-old male was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon
• A 17-year-old male was arrested for valid arrest and detain orders and possession of a stolen firearm
• An 18-year-old male was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a stolen firearm
• A 21-year-old male was arrested for felon in possession, felony firearm, possession of stolen firearm, possession with the intent to distribute crack, possession with the intent to distribute meth, and probation violations
• A 21-year-old male was arrested for resisting and obstructing, possession with the intent to distribute crack cocaine, and driving while unlicensed
• A 33-year-old male was arrested for felon in possession, felony firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of a stolen firearm
The investigation is still on-going and additional charges may be sought for those contacted.
A stolen AR-style rifle, high-capacity magazines, a stolen semi-automatic pistol, illegal narcotics and evidence of manufacturing illegal narcotics were seized from the home.
