Interfaith Homes Shooting

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Saturday, August 25, 2018 around 5:52 am, Kalamazoo Public Safety received multiple calls of shots fired in the area of Interfaith Homes in the 1000 block of Interfaith Boulevard. Several officers responded and located a 23 year old female suffering from a gunshot wound to her abdominal region. The female was transported to Bronson Hospital where she is being treated for non life-threatening injuries. At this time, suspect information is limited and officers are in the preliminary stages of the investigation.

Rollover Crash

Kalamazoo, MI: On Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 2:12 p.m. Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the intersection of N. Sage Street and W. Main Street, regarding a rollover crash.

KDPS officers responded and located a two car crash that occurred and one of the vehicles came to a rest on its roof. The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the rollover vehicle, a 55 year old Kalamazoo resident, was northbound on Sage St and failed to yield the right of way as he entered the intersection and was subsequently struck by a westbound vehicle driven by a 44 year old Kalamazoo resident. Both drivers were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their injuries are not considered life threatening.

Vehicle Crashes into House

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at approximately 09:30 AM, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety was dispatched to a personal injury accident in the 1600 block of S Burdick St. Initial reports indicated a vehicle crashed into a house and the occupants were trapped inside. Upon arrival officers located two patients whom were complaining of minor injuries but were able to self extricate themselves from the vehicle. Both were treated for their injuries at an area hospital. The house was unoccupied at the time and sustained structural damage.

Fireworks Ordinances

Kalamazoo, MI:

Every year Kalamazoo Public Safety is inundated with calls regarding fireworks and noise violations within the City of Kalamazoo around the Fourth of July holiday. Kalamazoo Public Safety would like to remind citizens of the restrictions regarding fireworks use within the City of Kalamazoo. Fireworks are allowed during the following times:

 Tuesday, July 3rd from 8 am to 11:59 pm

 Wednesday, July 4th from 8 am to 11:59 pm

 Thursday, July 5th from 8 am to 11:59 pm

The use of fireworks is still subject to Kalamazoo City noise ordinances (see attached ordinances). Fireworks are not allowed at any times outside of this period during the holiday.

The Fourth of July holiday is one of the busiest times of year for our police and fire resources. Our officers will continue to respond to emergency and priority calls for service, as well as, patrol for and enforce fireworks ordinances whenever possible throughout the holiday time frame.

To report the use of illegal fireworks in the City of Kalamazoo, please call our non-emergency number at 269-337-8120. We wish everyone a safe and happy 4th of July!

City of Kalamazoo Code of Ordinances:

  • 15-30. Consumer fireworks prohibitions.
  1. A person shall not ignite, discharge or use consumer fireworks except during permitted hours on the day preceding, the day of, or the day after a national holiday.
  2. No person shall ignite, discharge or use consumer fireworks between the hours of 12 midnight and 8:00 a.m. of the day preceding, the day of, or the day after a national holiday, except that on New Year’s Day no person shall ignite, discharge or use consumer fireworks between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.
  3. No person shall ignite, discharge or use consumer fireworks on public property, school property, church property or the property of another person without that organization’s or person’s express permission to use consumer fireworks on those premises.
  4. Consumer fireworks shall not be sold to a minor.
  • 15-31. General noise prohibition.

The ignition, discharge or use of consumer fireworks shall be subject to the general prohibition contained at § 21-6 of the Kalamazoo City Code, which addresses continued excessive or unusually loud noise, measured or unmeasured, which disrupts, injures or endangers the comfort, repose, health, peace or safety of any person within the limits of the City.

  • 15-32. Penalties.

A person who violates this article is responsible for a municipal civil infraction and may be ordered to pay a civil fine of not more than $500.

KDPS Responds to Two Structure Fires

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Sunday, June 24th, 2018 around 1:50 am, Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the 600 block of Lake St regarding a working structure fire. Upon arrival, officers found that the residence was condemned and had been previously boarded up. There were flames and smoke visible from the front of the residence. Fire suppression efforts were started and the fire brought under control within an hour. The fire is being investigated as suspicious at this time.

Just as officers were clearing the Lake St fire, reports of a second structure fire came in at 3:22 am in the 600 block of Mabel St. Upon arrival, officers found that this residence was also vacant. Heavy smoke and flames could be seen from the rear of the residence. Fire suppression efforts were started and the fire brought under control in just over an hour. There were no injuries reported in either fire. Both fires are being investigated by the Fire Marshal.
