KDPS Records Division Closed tomorrow Friday, October 14th

The Kalamazoo Public Safety Records Division will be closed on Friday, October 14, 2022.

Normal business days/hours will resume on Monday, October 17th, 2022:

Mon-Fri 8 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays.

The following alternatives are also available:

To pay a parking ticket issued by the City of Kalamazoo/Public Safety, do so online at RMC | Ticketing and Enforcement (rmcpay.com)

Copies of accident reports are available for purchase online at https://policereports.lexisnexis.com/

To request a copy of a police report, send an email to kdpsrecords@kalamazoocity.org with the specific request and it will be acknowledged when business hours resume.

For criminal history checks, the Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT) allows the search of public criminal history record information maintained by the Michigan State Police, Criminal Justice Information Center. All felonies and serious misdemeanors that are punishable by over 93 days are required to be reported to the state repository by law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and courts in all 83 Michigan counties. Information on obtaining these background checks is available at Home Page – ICHAT Menu (michigan.gov)

Sex Offender Registration payments can be made at Kalamazoo City Hall, 241 W. South. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Kalamazoo Public Safety is Hiring Public Safety Officers!

Accepting Applications Online August 15 – August 28, 2022

Kalamazoo- Kalamazoo Public Safety (KDPS) will open the application process for the position of “Public Safety Officer” on Monday, August 15, 2022. The application process will remain open through Sunday, August 28, 2022.

Applications may be submitted online between 08/15/22 and 08/28/22 at the following websites:

KDPS’ hiring process includes an application, written test, physical agility test, background investigation and several interviews throughout the process. If these steps are successfully completed, it is anticipated that an offer of employment will be given in December 2022.

Qualifications:

To be considered for employment, applicants must be a U.S. citizen, have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent, possess a valid driver’s license, and be 21 years old at time of appointment (January 2023). Applicants will also be required to pass a written and physical test and undergo an extensive background investigation. KDPS seeks candidates with integrity, a strong work ethic, and a desire to serve our Kalamazoo community.

Public Safety Officers (PSOs) protect and serve the community by responding to calls for service involving police, fire, and medical emergencies in a professional and caring manner, to enhance the quality of life for all people in the City of Kalamazoo. KDPS offers a meaningful career that promotes balance between life and career and has opportunities for professional development and advancement through promotion.

Applicants do not need to have prior police or fire certifications to be considered, as KDPS will sponsor hired applicants through the police academy and provide fire training, if needed. Additional benefits include, but are not limited to, a Spanish language bonus, veteran on-the-job training education benefits, a defined benefit pension plan, a $5,000 annual residency bonus, a tuition reimbursement program, the federal direct student loan forgiveness program, and more.

Additionally, KDPS offers lateral transfers for current police officers (MCOLES certified) and full-time firefighter/medical first responders. Police officers or firefighters currently employed full-time and in good standing with another police or fire agency have the opportunity to laterally transfer up to three (3) years of police experience in regard to the current wage scale. This lateral transfer will significantly increase starting wages for eligible new hires.

Personal Injury Accident

Kalamazoo:

On Thursday, December 3, 2020 around 11:45 am, Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were dispatched to the intersection of S. Westnedge/ W. Lovell St. for a report of a 2-vehicle crash. Arriving officers located an unconscious male entrapped in one vehicle who had to be extricated from the vehicle. The subject was later transported to Bronson Hospital by Life EMS for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was uninjured.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

City Wide Recruiting Tour

INFORMATION: On Tuesday, November 10, 2020, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety will be visiting 7 locations throughout the City of Kalamazoo to recruit future Public Safety Officers. At each location, Public Safety Officers will be available to discuss the current hiring process and encourage Kalamazoo residents to pursue a career in public service. Our current process for Recruit opened on November 2, 2020 and will close on November 20, 2020. Here is a list of where we will be and when. Look for us in the parking lot areas of the following locations with a Fire Engine and Police cruisers!
