No Contact Advisory for Portage Creek

April 3, 2022 by Michael Ferguson

On 4/3/2022 at approximately 11:00am, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to a two-vehicle crash at Portage and Alcott St.  PSO’s arrived to find a motorcycle had struck a semi-truck.  During the crash, the motorcycle struck the fuel tank on the semi-truck which caused approximately 40 gallons of diesel fuel to leak onto the street.  A portion of the fuel leaked into the storm drain before Public Safety and Public Works personnel arrived to stop the leak.  There were no injuries reported in the crash.

Public Safety personnel immediately contacted State and Local Authorities to mitigate the release.  Several prevention measures were set in place along the affected waterways.  However, a no contact advisory is being issued to the following portions of Portage Creek:

  • Portage Creek from Alcott St. downstream to the Kalamazoo River
  • Kalamazoo River from Michigan Ave. North to the Gull St. Bridge

All persons are advised to avoid contact with the waterways listed above until further notice.

March 19, 2022 by Michael Ferguson

Kalamazoo, MI:

On 3/19/2022 at approximately 10:00am, a Kalamazoo resident reported their vehicle stolen from the 4000 block of Horton Dr.  At approximately 8:30pm on 3/19/2022, PSO’s located the vehicle and attempted to pull it over but the car did not stop and fled from PSO’s.  PSO’s pursued the vehicle for approximately eight minutes.  At that point, the driver jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot.  PSO’s chased the driver on foot and took him into custody a short distance away.

As the driver was jumping out of the stolen vehicle, another occupant quickly jumped into the driver seat and drove the stolen car away.  A second vehicle pursuit was initiated by Deputies from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.  The second pursuit lasted about five minutes and came to an end on the City’s East Side when the vehicle stopped and the three remaining occupants fled from the vehicle on foot.  A K9 track was conducted by a K9 from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office and went approximately two miles.  Two of the suspects were found hiding in a train car and taken into custody by Sheriff’s Deputies.  The third suspect was not immediately located.

The driver of the first pursuit is a 16yr old male from Kalamazoo.  He was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home on multiple felony charges.  The two occupants of the second pursuit were identified as a 17yr old male from Kalamazoo and a 21yr old male from Kalamazoo.  The 17yr old was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home and the 21yr old male was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.  Both were charged with felony offenses.

Kalamazoo, MI:

On January 26th, 2022 at approximately 12:10pm, Public Safety Officers responded to the 800 block of West Cedar for a report of shots fired. The PSO’s arrived and spoke with a female who reported having a dispute with a male that she has a domestic relationship with. During the argument, the male pointed a gun at her. The male, suspect, then walked outside and got into an argument with a second male family member and subsequently fired a gunshot at him. The female victim was not injured as a result of the incident. The male victim left the scene prior to officers arriving and refused to cooperate with the police investigation. Based on the information received during the investigation, it is not believed he suffered any injuries during the incident.

The suspect then retreated into a house and refused to exit. Due to the circumstances, the Kalamazoo Metro SWAT Team responded to the scene.
