House Fire

Kalamazoo, MI: 

On 10/2/2022 at approximately 4:00pm, KDPS responded to a house fire in the 1700 block of Egleston Avenue in Kalamazoo.  Public Safety Officers (PSO’s) arrived and found heavy fire at the rear of the residence.  Fire had also spread to the neighboring structure due to its proximity to the originating residence.

PSO’s had the fire extinguished within ten minutes.  All the residents were able to evacuate the structures and were not injured.  There were no injuries to any PSO’s on scene.  This cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Business Robbed

Kalamazoo, MI: 

On September 25th, 2022 at approximately 4:40pm, Public Safety Officers (PSO) responded to a business in the 1700 block of South Westnedge for a report of an armed robbery.    

PSO’s arrived and were advised a lone male suspect approached the checkout lane, presented a handgun, and robbed the business of an undisclosed amount of money.  The suspect then fled the store on foot.  PSO’s made attempts to locate the suspect but were unable to find him. 

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6’0”, wearing a mask, dark blue hoodie, and black pants.

Patrol Car Damaged

Kalamazoo, MI: 

On September 17th, 2022 at approximately 4:20pm, Public Safety Officers (PSO) responded to the 100 block of E. Walnut after a male was seen throwing a “Molotov Cocktail” at an unoccupied KDPS patrol vehicle.  PSO’s arrived and confirmed that an incendiary device had been thrown at the car which caused minor fire damage. 

Several witnesses reported the suspect, who had thrown the device, was seen fleeing the area on foot.  The witnesses followed the suspect and guided PSO’s to his whereabouts.  PSO’s located the suspect and he was arrested. The suspect, 30-year-old male from Kalamazoo, was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on multiple felony charges. 

The patrol car suffered minor damage.  The fire was put out by bystanders in the area using fire extinguishers.  A photograph of the patrol car will be provided.

Vehicle Crash

****UPDATE: As of 4:45pm, South Westnedge is now open to southbound traffic. There is a temporary lane closure but this will not take long.

On September 17th, 2022 at approximately 1:20pm, Public Safety Officers (PSO) responded to the 800 block of N. Westnedge Ave. for a report of a single vehicle crash.  PSO’s arrived and found a single vehicle that had crashed into a tree and a light pole.  The driver of the vehicle was found unconscious and quickly transported to an area Hospital.  The driver, 25-year-old female from Kalamazoo, was later pronounced dead.  Her name is being withheld at this time. 

The driver was the lone occupant in the vehicle.  Nobody else was injured because of the crash.  No other vehicles were involved.  The crash is currently being investigated but speed is believed to be a factor.  South Westnedge is closed from West Paterson to West North St.  We ask that you avoid this area and find an alternative route.

Two People Shot

Two People Shot

Kalamazoo, MI: 

On August 8th, 2022 at approximately 3:15am, Public Safety Officers (PSO) responded to the 500 block of Lulu St. for a report of a shooting.  PSO’s arrived and located one victim suffering from a gunshot wound.  A short time later, a second victim arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound.  Both victims reported they were at a party in the area when somebody began shooting.  Both victims were hit by gunfire but suffered non-life-threatening wounds. 

The first victim is a 27-year-old female from Kalamazoo.  The second victim is a 19-year-old female from Kalamazoo.  Both were treated at a local hospital and were listed in stable condition. No suspect information was provided to officers while investigating this incident and no arrests have been made.
