Shooting Investigation

On Monday, August 3, 2020 at approximately 7:00 pm, Officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the report of gunfire in the 1500 block of Cobb Avenue.

Officers arrived and spoke with area residents who reported hearing numerous shots being fired.  Witnesses also reported seeing a victim who appeared to have been struck by gunfire.

Investigating officers canvassed the area, and quickly learned a gunshot victim was driven away from the scene in a vehicle.  This vehicle was contacted as it arrived at a local hospital.

The victim a 17-year-old Kalamazoo resident is receiving treatment at this local hospital and is listed in stable condition.

Gunfire Exchanged

On Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at approximately 7:45 pm, Officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to multiple reports of gunfire in the 500 Block of Edwin Avenue.

Officers arrived and spoke with area residents who reported hearing numerous shots being fired.  Witnesses also reported seeing a vehicle fleeing the area recklessly and striking a curb.

Investigating officers canvassed the area and located multiple spent bullet casings.  These casings were different calibers and indicated that multiple firearms were likely discharged during this incident.

KDPS investigates shooting; juvenile injured

On July 19, 2020 at 5:09 a.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 1100-blk of Douglas Ave on a report of a shooting. There, they located a 15 year-old male suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. The male reported he was walking on Alamo Ave near Douglas Ave when he was shot by an unknown subject in a vehicle.

This incident does not appear to be related to the earlier shooting at Douglas Ave / W Paterson St.

The Kalamazoo Dept of Public Safety is continuing to investigate this incident.

Three subjects arrested, firearms seized after KDPS receives a report of an assault.

Kalamazoo, MI:

On July 18th, 2020 at approximately 2:16 pm, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officers responded to the 1800 block of South Burdick Street regarding a report of a suspicious vehicle. The caller reported seeing a vehicle circling the area several times. Due to several recent incidents of gun violence in the immediate area, the caller believed the occupants of the vehicle may have been armed and were possibly searching for a target.

Within a few minutes of the first call, Kalamazoo Centralized Dispatch received another call regarding the same vehicle in the 200 block of E Maple Street, which is approximately two blocks away from the first call. This caller reported that he had been threatened by a male armed with a handgun.

Officers began checking the area and located a vehicle matching the description in the 2000 block of Portage Street. The vehicle was occupied by three males. When Officers made contact with the vehicle occupants, the Officers located two handguns, as well as other evidence indicating that shots had been fired from inside the vehicle recently. The three vehicle occupants, men aged 17, 21, and 23, were arrested for multiple charges, including felonious assault, carrying concealed weapons, and outstanding warrants.

Armed Robbery suspect arrested

On July 12th 2020 at approximately 6:50 a.m., the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety investigated an armed robbery that took place near N. Burdick and Eleanor St.

Two Kalamazoo residents were walking to work when they were approached by a lone male. The male asked them for money, and when they stated they did not have any the male pulled out a large knife and demanded money.

One of the two citizens was a concealed pistol license holder and drew his weapon to protect himself and significant other. As the citizens attempted to distance themselves from the suspect, he continued advancing towards them while holding the knife. They were able to retreat to a nearby building and call 911.

Upon Officers arrival they were able to locate the suspect a short distance away and take him into custody without incident.

The suspect, a 64-year-old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested on several felony charges and is currently awaiting arraignment.
