Car vs Pedestrian Accident

Kalamazoo, MI: On Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at approximately 7:11 pm, officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) responded to the area of Kalamazoo Avenue and N Burdick St to a report of a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle. Officers arrived at the area and located a 61-year-old Kalamazoo resident, with apparent injuries, down in the roadway. Officers rendered medical aid to the pedestrian on scene, and the patient was transported to a local hospital. The involved driver, also a Kalamazoo resident, remained at the scene of the accident. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor. The patient is currently listed in critical condition and the investigation is ongoing.

PRESS RELEASE

KDPS K9 Benno locates Armed Robbery suspect after K9 track

Kalamazoo, MI: On Monday, January 2, 2023, officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) responded to reports of an armed robbery that occurred in the 1600 block of N. Westnedge Ave.  During the robbery, what appeared to be a black handgun was pointed at the business owner before the suspect fled on foot.  A 19-year-old Kalamazoo resident was found hiding several blocks away by KDPS K9 Benno and arrested.  A firearm was also located with the suspect who was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail facing several felony charges.

PRESS RELEASE

Three firearms seized

Kalamazoo, MI:

On January 1st, 2023 Kalamazoo Public Safety was monitoring a large gathering in the 2900 block of W Michigan Ave.  A vehicle was observed leaving the area with an equipment violation and was stopped near Kendall Ave and Howard St.  During the traffic stop a firearm was observed inside the vehicle and seized in the course of the investigation. 

While this traffic stop was occurring, multiple gun shots were reported in the 2700 block of W Michigan Ave.  Officers responded and while contacting an occupied vehicle, a firearm was observed in the backseat.  The backseat passenger initially disobeyed lawful orders from officers and grabbed the pistol, attempting to hide it.  Officers were able to arrest this subject and secure the firearm safely.  During this investigation, two additional firearms were located inside the vehicle with the other passengers. A female Kalamazoo resident was released on scene while a 22 year old Portage resident and 38 year old Kalamazoo resident were arrested on weapons charges.

KDPS investigates shooting, male struck by gunfire

Kalamazoo, MI:
On December 24th, 2022, at approximately 2:16 p.m., Kalamazoo County Consolidated Dispatch Authority received a report of several gunshots in the 1100 block of Conant St. At approximately 2:26 p.m., a male suffering from a gunshot wound arrived at a local hospital. After speaking with the victim, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers were able to locate the scene of the shooting near the intersection of Conant St and Hawley St.

The victim is a 23-year-old man from Kalamazoo. His condition is currently stable. As of this time, no suspect information is available.

KDPS arrests suspect for armed home invasion and unlawful imprisonment.

Kalamazoo, MI:

On December 23rd, 2022, at approximately 10:30 a.m., Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded to an apartment in the 1600 block of Nottingham Ave regarding a report of a hostage situation. A woman reported that a male was holding three juveniles hostage at gunpoint inside an apartment. The Kalamazoo Metro Special Weapons and Tactics team (KM SWAT) was called to the scene. After investigating further, PSOs were able to locate all three juveniles at a different location in the City of Kalamazoo. They were unharmed and told officers they had been able to escape from their captor, who was still in possession of a firearm.

As SWAT officers were contacting other residents in the apartment building, a resident of a neighboring apartment told officers that the suspect had forced entry into her apartment and was still armed with a firearm. Officers entered the apartment and located the suspect. They were able to take him into custody without any further resistance. The suspects weapon, a 9 mm handgun, was located near where he was taken into custody.

The suspect, a 26-year-old male from Kalamazoo, was arrested for home invasion, unlawful imprisonment, and multiple weapons offenses. He was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail and is awaiting arraignment.
