Structure Fire

Kalamazoo, Michigan:

On Thursday, June 8, 2023, at approximately 4:55 P.M, Kalamazoo Public Safety Department responded to the 1300 block of N Burdick Street for a report of a structure fire. Upon officers’ arrival, they located heavy fire and smoke coming from the home. The fire was brought under control in about 60 minutes. There are no injuries.

The Kalamazoo Public Safety Fire Marshall is investigating the incident.

PRESS RELEASE

Person Shot

Kalamazoo, MI:

On June 7th 2023, around 3:00 PM Kalamazoo Public Safety received several calls regarding a person shot in the 1100 block of Stockbridge Ave.  Officers located a juvenile in the ally who was suffering from life-threatening injuries and rendered medical aid immediately.  Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, which is on-going, and the age of the shooting victim, their medical status and other details will not be released at this time.  

A follow-up press release with additional information will be sent out at a later time.

UPDATE: Person Shot

Markii Jerrell Robinson Killed in Drive by Shooting

On Tuesday, June 7, 2023, at 2:55 PM, Officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to a report of shots fired in the 1100 hundred block of E Stockbridge Avenue.  On arrival, Officers located Markii Jerrell Robinson, who was critically wounded with a gunshot wound to the head.  Officers and Life paramedics rendered emergency medical care and transported Mr. Robinson to an area hospital.  Unfortunately, Mr. Robinson’s wounds were not survivable.  He was officially pronounced dead at 3:45 PM. 

Detectives are looking for a vehicle that may be involved.  The vehicle is a gray 2023 Hyundai Tucson with an Indiana license plate of FL770ACY.  The vehicle was recently reported stolen, and the occupants should be considered armed and dangerous.  If observed, please call 911.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety wishes to extend its sincerest condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Robinson.  The investigation into the killing of Mr. Robinson a 17-year-old male from Kalamazoo is ongoing.  Witnesses and those with information are asked to call the Criminal Investigation Division at 269-337-8139. The community can also provide information anonymously through Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.

Personal Injury Accident with Entrapment

Kalamazoo, MI:

On June 1st around 2:00 AM Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to the intersection of Park St and Michigan Ave for the report of a vehicle accident with injuries.  Officers located two vehicles that had collided and suffered significant damage in addition to striking the business at the intersection.

One patient suffered serious injuries while another was trapped inside a vehicle requiring the use of hydraulic tools to safely remove them.  In total, 5 people were injured from the accident and taken to area hospitals for treatment.  Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the collision and the intersection is open for normal traffic at this time.

Firearms Seized from Shooting

Kalamazoo, MI:

On May 30th, 2023 around 11:55 PM Kalamazoo Public Safety was dispatched to the report of several gunshots in the area of Washington Ave. and James St. The volley of gunfire was also heard from officers a short distance away who responded immediately. 

Officers were able to obtain a description of the suspect vehicle that was announced county wide and located a short time later by a deputy with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department.  The driver, a 22 year old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested on multiple felony charges and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail. Four firearms related to the shots fired call were seized from the traffic stop.

Residential Structure Fire

Kalamazoo, MI:

On May 29th, 2023 at 4:10 AM Kalamazoo Public Safety was dispatched to the report of a residential structure fire in the 1600 block of N Park St.  The first arriving units found the front of the residence fully involved with fire. 

Crews were forced to make an exterior attack due to amount of fire and a partial collapse of the second floor and roof.  The fire was brought under control in under 20 minutes however, crews are still on scene addressing lingering hot spots. 

There were no injuries from the fire, but N Park St will be shut down from Lulu St to Hopkins St for a few hours and motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.  If travel in the area is necessary, Church St or Princeton Ave can be used to bypass the fire scene.  The Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
