May 28, 2022 by Scott VanderEnde

Kalamazoo, MI:

On Saturday, May 28, 2022 at approximately 7:45 pm, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers located a stolen pickup truck, that was reported stolen out of Eaton County.

A KDPS Officer initiated a traffic stop on the stolen truck near Wells Pl. and March St.  The vehicle fled from the officer and approximately 2 blocks away at the intersection of Lake and Mills St. the vehicle ran the red traffic light and struck a vehicle that was traveling southbound on Mills St.

After crashing, the driver of the stolen pickup truck fled the scene on foot but was captured quickly by police. The stolen pickup truck had two additional passengers.  The uninvolved vehicle that was struck was driven by a 33-year-old female.

The passengers of the stolen truck are 21- and 24-year-old males.  Both passengers were transported to an area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver, a 41-year-old Kalamazoo resident, is in custody for receiving and concealing stolen property (Stolen Truck) and Flee & Elude. He is currently being evaluated at an area hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. It does not appear that the occupants of the stolen automobile were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The driver of the uninvolved vehicle is being treated an at area hospital with minor injuries.   The driver was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The intersection at Lake and Mills Street is closed at this time. Consumers Energy responded to repair a damaged utility pole and the KDPS Crime Lab is processing the scene. Motorist are asked to avoid the area.
