FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sunday, March 20, 2022

Update on a critical incident in 1000 Block of South Westnedge.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – On the morning of Sunday, March 20, 2022 at approximately 10:19 a.m., officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the 1000 block of South Westnedge to conduct an investigation into suspected criminal activity.

While on scene, the lone suspect, a 33-year-old male Battle Creek resident, fired shots from a handgun. An officer then returned fire, striking the suspect. The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene.

No officers were injured.

As per KDPS protocol, the Michigan State Police were notified of the officer involved shooting and responded to the scene. The investigation is now being handled by the Michigan State Police.
