Fatal Fire Investigation

On Saturday, January 30, 2021 at approximately 0119 am, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety was dispatched to the 1400 block of S. Westnedge regarding a structure fire.
First arriving officers reported fire on the second floor of the building. Additionally, it was learned that the residence was occupied by at least one person. A search and rescue team as well as an interior attack team were sent into the building. Moments later, the search and rescue team located the resident in the room with heavy smoke and fire.
The victim was immediately removed from the residence, however sadly, did not survive.
The fire started on the second floor and made it to the attic area of the home. The fire was brought under control in approximately 45 minutes.
The victim’s name is being withheld at this time until next of kin can be notified.
The fire is currently being investigated by the Fire Marshal. Anyone having information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 269-337-8139 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
