Fuel Leak on Roadway

Kalamazoo, MI:

On December 23rd, Public Safety Officers responded to a traffic crash that had occurred on the south side of the I-94 overpass on Portage Rd.  A semi-tracker moving a generator was too tall for the over-pass and struck the exit sign before hitting the I-beams on the bottom side of the bridge causing minor damage to the beams.  The impact caused a fuel leak in the generator spilling diesel fuel onto the roadway.  The Portage Fire Department also responded and was able to dike off the storm drains prior to the fuel mixing with rain-water and running off.  MDOT inspected the bridge and ensured its safety for travel.  A local environmental consulting company was able to assist with the cleanup of the fuel.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Kalamazoo Public Safety at (269)488-8911 or Silent Observer at (269)343-2100 or www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.
