Traffic Enforcement Leads to Seizure of Firearms

November 11, 2020 by Charles Treppa

Date: Wednesday, November 11, 2020

Address:  150 E. Crosstown Pkwy. Suite A, Kalamazoo, MI 49001

Contact:  Captain Craig Habel, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety 337-8139

On Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at approximately 10:00 pm, officers were conducting a directed patrol in the 600 block of Portage Street.  This patrol was directed to this area in an effort to address quality of life concerns reported by the community.

While addressing these concerns, officers conducted a traffic stop of a motor vehicle for a traffic violation.  During this contact, one of the passengers of the vehicle fled on foot.  A K-9 track was conducted; however, was not successful due to inclement weather.

The remaining occupants of the vehicle were both discovered to be in possession of handguns.  During a search of the vehicle, additional evidence was locating indicating that a third handgun may have been involved.

The suspects identified are both 22-year old Kalamazoo residents.  They have been lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail regarding weapons charges.

Anyone having information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 337-8139 or Silent Observer at 343-2100.
