Kalamazoo, MI:

On Thursday, November 5, 2020 at approximately 11:00 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the 100 block of East Water Street in reference to the report of a person who had been assaulted.

Officers arrived in the area and located a victim suffering from injuries related to this incident.  The victim reported being approached by three unknown individuals who solicited him for illegal drugs and money.   When these advances were declined the group began assaulting the victim.  During this assault a member of the group produced what was reported as a handgun, pointed it at the victim, and then struck the victim in the face with the handle of the gun.  Public Safety Officers rendered aid to the victim who was transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim was able to provide a detailed clothing description of the suspect with the handgun.  This information was quickly relayed to officers who had converged on the area.  While searching, an officer attempted to contact a subject in the immediate area who matched this description. The subject fled on foot and while doing so discarded a pneumatic firearm.  The suspect scaled a fence and hid within an area businesses property.

A K-9 officer was called to the business to assist in this search.  After approximately 10 minutes the suspect was located hiding on the property and was arrested.

The suspect is identified is a 18-year-old Kalamazoo resident.  They were lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail where they await arraignment on felonious assault and weapons charges.

The remaining involved subjects have not been located or identified.  Anyone who may have information regarding this investigation is asked to call Kalamazoo Public Safety at 488-8911 or Silent Observer at 343-2100 or www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.
