Kalamazoo, MI:

On Sunday August 16, 2020, around 9:20 pm, a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officer reported hearing numerous shots fired while patrolling the 400 block of Gilbert. Responding officers discovered casings near the intersection of Bridge St. / Gilbert Ave. and located a residence and vehicle that had been struck by bullets in the 700 block of Gilbert Ave. The residents near this home reported there were about 7 adults and an infant outside when two suspects began firing in their direction. Additionally, bullets had entered through a living room window where 4 young children were seated. One 18 year old female suffered minor injuries from the incident. A crime lab technician processed the scene. The two suspects fled the area on foot and were not located.

During the initial response of numerous officers responding to the shots fired, one officer observed a suspicious vehicle leaving the scene. A citizen contact was made with the driver of the vehicle in the 600 block of E. Michigan Ave. The driver of the vehicle admitted to witnessing the shots being fired and also admitted to possessing a firearm. The driver was taken into custody without incident after a loaded pistol was recovered from his person. The 19 year old Kalamazoo man was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail for carrying a concealed weapon in an automobile.

Anyone having information regarding this incident, or any other crimes in Kalamazoo, is encouraged to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 337-8994 or Silent Observer at 343-2100
