Shooting Investigation

On Tuesday June 30, 2020 at approximately 06:30 pm, Officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the report of gun fire in the 1500 block of Cameron Street. Officers arrived in the area and located several witnesses who reported hearing and seeing gun fire. Witnesses described a rolling gunfight involving multiple vehicles and multiple firearms. Officers also noted several shell casings littering the roadway.

In cadence with these events, a gunshot victim arrived at a local hospital. This victim reported being struck by gunfire at the above location. The victim, a 18-year-old Kalamazoo resident was treated and released a short time later. Upon treatment and discharge this patient was arrested for carrying a concealed firearm, firing from a moving vehicle, and felony firearm.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officers also located a vehicle, that matched the suspect vehicle description. After a short chase, the driver fled on foot and was apprehended a short distance later. A firearm was located in the vehicle, that matched the caliber of spent shell casings at the original scene. The 15 -year old driver was arrested for fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing an officer, and carrying a concealed firearm.  

This shooting occurred in a residential neighborhood and endangered the lives of innocent bystanders who were nearby. Anyone having information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 337-8139 or Silent Observer at 343-2100.
