On Saturday, June 21, 2020, at 2:30 am Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to a 911 call from a citizen stating their vehicle was trapped in a crowd of people and other vehicles in the 1300 block of N. Burdick St. When Public Safety Officers arrived in the area they observed a large party which had escalated to the point where hundreds of vehicles and pedestrians were completely blocking N. Burdick St. between Paterson St. and Clay St. This situation could have prevented police, fire and EMS from rendering aid to anyone inside this radius if they were injured or sick. During exhausted efforts of attempting to clear the overwhelming crowd, multiple shots were fired from an unknown subject inside of this large gathering. As the large crowd fled the area on foot, officers heard several additional rounds of gunfire in the general vicinity. There were no callers in reference to the shooter(s) and no reports of victims or anyone injured. Several bullet casings were located and seized as evidence in the area. It then took several hours, and most of the cities resources with the addition of the Michigan State Police, to clear the crowds and vehicles in and around the area.
Around 6:30 am, KDPS officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of Cadillac for a group of people fighting in the street. Officers arrived in the area to investigate and look for any injured parties. Unprovoked, the officers were approached by a male who threatened them with a weapon. At the conclusion of the incident a 26 year old Kalamazoo male resident was arrested for felonious assault on police officers and felony resisting and obstructing. He was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail. No other persons were reported injured in the original fight call.
