Driver arrested after fleeing from officers; stolen gun recovered

May 9, 2020 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

Around midnight on May 9, 2020, a KDPS officer attempted to stop a Chrysler 300 for speeding on N Westnedge Ave near Florence St. The vehicle immediately fled. The officer did not pursue it. Two minutes later, officers spotted the Chrysler parked in the 1100-blk of Prairie St. The suspect jumped out, and officers chased him on foot through Fairmount Park and through the woods toward Alamo Ave. PSO Cole and K9 Echo arrived and took over the pursuit. The suspect was quickly located hiding in a garage in the 1400-blk of Alamo Ave, and was taken into custody. During the foot pursuit, the suspect discarded a stolen pistol, which was recovered.

The suspect, a 17 year-old Kalamazoo resident, was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on charges of fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing, and several weapons charges.

Anyone having information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at (269) 488-8911 or Silent Observer at (269) 343-2100
