Officers locates suspect shooting firearm in the roadway

January 1, 2020 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

On December 31st, 2019, around 7:30 pm, a Public Safety Officer (PSO) was on patrol in the Edison Neighborhood near the intersection of James Street and Hays Park Avenue when he observed a subject firing a handgun in the middle of Hays Park Avenue. The PSO contacted the armed suspect after he tried to flee the area on foot. The PSO was able take him into custody without harm. A loaded firearm was recovered from the suspect.

An investigation into the crime found that the suspect was shooting at a group of people on a porch in the 1100 block of Hays Park Avenue. At the time of this report there were no persons located that were struck by the gunfire or that came forward as victims. The only injury found was to the suspect where he had shot himself in the leg.

An 18 year old City of Kalamazoo resident was arrested on three felony weapons offenses and was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Anyone having information regarding this incident, or any other crimes in Kalamazoo, is encouraged to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 337-8994 or Silent Observer at 343-2100
